I never really wrote out my thoughts on the Lord of the Rings movies, have I? For those not friended to my personal journal during the Fall 2011 semester, I took a class on the works of J.R.R. Tolkein, and was actually able to be in class for most of the discussions about The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I got some good insights and such on the books (sadly, due to the sober living home I was the live-in manager of falling apart and an eviction I was not able to actually complete the class, and my teacher retired so I can't take it again). But I had avoided the movies until I was done with the books. Now, I had seen the first movie when it came out, but I had forgotten most of the details by the time I took the class.

I love the movies. I lost my internet earlier today and watched disc 2 of the extended edition of "The Return of the King," skipping past the Sam/Frodo parts and watching the battles. If you don't know this already I'm an action junkie. I love explosions, I love violence, I love mayhem. And I love Eowyn, and watching her stand up to the Witch King is my favorite part of all three movies (I am an Eowyn fangirl and a Faramir/Eowyn shipper like whoa, so I'm biased). Also, watching Pippin save Faaramir is always a highlight (I hate Denethor...HATE HATE HATE Denethor, and John Noble did a really good job of reaffirming why I hated him so much in the books, so props to him). And then the end, after Gollum falls into Mount Doom all the way through. I always tear up at Frodo's good-bye scene.

But anyway, the trilogy as a whole is superb. It's three beautiful movies, and Peter Jackson did an excellent job showing these stories in the most beautiful way possible. I love the takeover at Isengard (my internet is down again as I'm typing this in Notepad, so I may watch the whole bit with Saruman and rat-faced man whose name I forgot next), and I want to go to Rivendell so bad. I want to state that it is Sean Bean's superb acting that made me change my opinion of Boromir from outright hate in the books to "OMG, I feel so bad for Boromir and I'm crying that he died" in the movies. This is one of the reasons I'm willing to give Game of Thrones a chance even though I know he dies at the end of S1 (and this is also the reason that "Silent Hill" is the only horror movie I ever gave a chance to, because I remembered how much I liked him in "Fellowship of the Ring"). I think I like Orlando Bloom more as Will Turner than Legolas, and considering I love Legolas this is saying something. I'm okay with Liv Tylre as Arwen and I will state that hearing her speak Elvish is pretty damn sexy, but Cate Blanchett is a better elf and Viggo Mortenson singing in elvish does things to my lady parts, and Hugo Weaving beats them all (God, I have SO MUCH LOVE for Elrond, and I can't wait to see him in "The Hobbit").

So yes, I really do love this trilogy to itty bitty pieces. It made the parts of the books I didn't like more palatable (mainly, everything with Frodo...I am not a Frodo fan but Elijah Wood did a very good job of at least making me care what happens to Frodo, something I didn't feel as I read the books) and made the parts of the books I loved even better (BATTLE OF GONDOR FTW!!!), even though there were incosistences. Also? Having seen Karl Urban in "Star Trek" and "RED" I can now see why the fandom went gaga for Eomer and it is justly deserved, and I'm glad I can add these movies to ones I would reccomend him in. Now, it just needs to hurry up and be December so I can get my fix of "The Hobbit" and add yet another project to my Martin Freeman Appreciation list (on it now: "Love Actually," "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" and obviously Sherlock). Now I'm going off to watch the trailer for "The Hobbit" and then? Isengard!
