Do I smell Disc Read Error???...personally, i blame the patriots....

as i stated in my last entry, speculation on nintendo's plans are already underway...but the console isn't what worries me...its the DS that has me worried. although it continues to do extremely well, the "mainstream" gamer (aka anyone who buys Madden 2005) will effectivly look past it, in favor of the PSP's easily scratchable, seizure-enducing ( Read more... )

Believe me. I'm as big of a Nintendo fan as you. I scrounge for every last detail of information on anything Nintendo. I buy 90% of their first-party games. Hell, I even write for a next-gen Nintendo fan site (DSRevolution.com - Formally GamecubeNetwork.com). But I disagree with you on some points. Namely the PSP.

First off, I'm rooting for Nintendo. I love Nintendo. But you have to admit, Sony has made a pretty nice piece of hardware here. You're wrong on a few things about their system.

The screen: Sorry, it's not easily scratchable. The PSP actually has a more scratch resistant screen than the DS (which is pretty hard to believe considering you're actually supposed to touch the DS's screen). It is covered with a thick layer of protective coating and (while I doubt the validity of this statement) Sony reps have stated the need to use a knife to even put a scratch in it. A knife. Secondly, it's not seizure inducing. It's beautiful. The PSP's screen on even the lowest brightness setting is brighter than the DS's screen. Everything is so much more crisp, so much more clear, so much more vivid, and all in widescreen format, I don't know how you can put it down. It's quite obviously one of the system's advantages over the DS.

The PSP's effect on the market: It's not going to destory the handheld market. That was a blatantly fanboyish comment. In fact, it can only help it. While it does appeal to casual gamers more due to it's GRAFIKS N'D SEX DRUGS VIOLENCE (rock on olol), competition can only bring good for the handheld market. PSP comes out, omg everyone loves it!11!1 So Nintendo comes out with a GB Next that kicks it's ass. Sony retorts by making the revolutonary PSP2, awesome. And so on and so on.

However, if Nintendo planned their strategy correctly, and the DS actually is a third pillar, this wouldn't even need to happen, there would be no plausible way they could lose. The DS battles neck and neck with the PSP, then right when the Revolution comes out, it launches with GB Next; an insanely powerful one screened handheld. While the combined effort of Nintendo's two consoles kicks the crap out of Sony, the big S (ollolol) decides to release the PSP2. As soon as that happens, Nintendo releases the DS2, and so on and so on. Get my point? With this strategy, and the Revolution's awesomeness, Nintendo could esily become number one next gen.

While I'm looking forward to the DS much more due to all the innovation, originality, and Nintendo titles it's bringing to the table, the PSP is also quite the nice machine. With video, music, pictures, confirmed frimware updating, confirmed wi-fi internet (including a browser), and graphics that literally trounce the DS's, it's sure to be a great system.

Next time try to look evenly on both sides of the market. Put your Nintendo fanboyism behind you, and you will see things much more clearly.

It's still ok to hate Microsoft though.

(Oh, and while GTA isn't an amazing game, it doesn't suck wither. You have to love the huge, free-roaming environments).

(Oh, and Super Metroid is overrated. ;-]).

(Oh, and I want Animal Crossing online).

(Oh, and Eifginy)

THATS THE POINT!!!!! scagator January 21 2005, 20:19:55 UTC
heya brian. couple things:

1) this entire thing is my opinion.

2) the screen: actually, I'm pretty sure what you're thinking of, the supposed "indestructable mega screen of death," is an accessory. it goes over the normal screen to prevent major gashes in the screen. this $20-30 investment will only remind you that you're spending money on an accessory that will protect you're normal screen, which should be scratch resistant, from getting scratched. yup. sounds like sony's reputation of crappy hardware continues. (keep in mind, i'm not entirely sure about this...oh wait, yes i am. )

3) effect on the market: the way i see it, it could happen one of 2 ways:
1- the psp finds a niche in the market, 2 handhelds co-exist, all is not right with the world...blah blah blah. or..
2- the psp lowers the standards, effectivly dragging the market down with it. earth is destroyed in a firey explosion.
i'm not denying the 3rd pillar theory. in fact, i hope it comes to fruition. but, mainstream gamers will ALWAYS favor beauty over performance. it always happens that way. they don't care if the games are good. as long as it makes them seem cooler, they'll buy it. this my friends, is called stupidity. it's a common disease. if you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of stupidity, immeadiatly call 1-800-GO-KILL-YOURSELF.
but, hopefully, i'm wrong. and the revolution really does change the way we play games, and...well...we win.

4) final thoughts:
movies- yeah, thats right. buy an entirely new media format just to watch your favorite movie on the road. oh wait. they don't have your favorite movie in UMD disc format??? only sony movies? damn. well, at least it plays music...
music- because music is stored on memory "sticks", the amount you can hold really depends on how many you buy. this is a problem, considering music and games are held on seperate sticks. Wanna listen to that new "G-Unit" CD you just downloaded??? OOPS! looks like you need ANOTHER MEMORY STICK!!! hohohoh! that'll be $20. sony's laughin all the way to the bank...and the fact that mp3 players hold a lot more for a better price only adds salt to the wound.
pictures- you mean, it can take pictures now??? HOLY SHIT. i'm sure we all NEED a camera. what kinda genius came up with that idea? "HEY GUYS!!! LETS ADD A CAMERA! IT'LL BE LIKE ALL THOSE PICTURE TAKING CELL PHONES! IT'LL BE COOL! WHY?? BECAUSE WE SAY SO!!! AND AFTER THAT, WE'LL ADD A PHONE! OMG! I ROCK! HIGH FIVES!" yeah. sony just seems intent on cramming as much as it can down the assholes of their systems. but honestly, hoe many people use the add-ons? I've used my ps2 dvd player once. ever. and it started acting weird afterward. yeah. gay.

In conclusion, Yes. my nintendo fanboyism is behind me, raping me in the ass, even as i type this.

Micro$oft makes the xbox logo out of aborted fetuses.

(i honestly thought the series went downhill halfway through vice city. its all the same. and i was really only emphasizing the fact that people bought it just because everyone else was.)

(super metroid slept with your mom.)

(animal crossing was ok. i didn't like that fact that you need an entire freaking memory card to play it. but online would definitly make it better.)

(evgeny is a 6 year old boy. Joe, if you read this, i can try and find his address and phone number for you. I'll send him your regards ;).)

I can perfectly design intricate websites, yet I forget a " in the simple code.

I look forward to commenting in your Live Journal. Have I finally found someone into videogames enough to discuss the industry instead of just the games?

Sexy.
