- Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows that over 2,000 Australians die as a result of suicide each year.

- The number of attempts has been estimated to be 50-100 times greater.

- Suicide is now the leading cause of death among young people under the age of 30.

- Men are 4 times more likely to commit suicide then women and they usually use more violent means to end their lives. But girls are more likely to try.

- Throughout the world, about 2000 people kill themselves each day. That's about 80 per hour, three quarters of a million a year.

- Studies have found that more than 75% of all completed suicides did things in the few weeks or months prior to their deaths to indicate to others that they were in deep despair.

- The fact that a person is still alive is sufficient proof that part of him/her wants to remain alive. The suicidal person is ambivalent - part of him/her wants to live and part of him/her wants not so much death as he/she wants the pain to end. It is the part that wants to live that tells another “I feel suicidal.”

- Often cryptic messages, small hints, uncharacteristic and sometimes reckless behaviour can be all the warning signs someone will display, whereas more often then not a person will ask someone close to them for help.
always take any "cries for help" seriously. in most cases a cry for help gone unanswered adds to a person's determination in taking their own life.
