New A&S rules for youth at Pennsic

I apologize to those who see this twice and those who do not go to Pennsic.

But, while this is currently a Pennsic rule, I am concerned it may spread.

I had heard about this last week, and I had assumed - incorrectly - that it was a misinterpretation, but I was wrong,  I went away to War Camp, so I figured it all would have been explained by the ( Read more... )

Yeah, I'm going to have to call this a little ridiculous. In addition to the insult to the youth, I'm thinking of the annoyance it will cause parents.

This is going to lead to more bored teenagers, and therefore more trouble from them.

It also seems a big jump from being able to attend without anybody, to needing a legal guardian, not just a 'babysitter.' And it ruins some of my plans with a teenager in my camp.

So off to write a letter I go . . .

Wait... so they're allowed to roam around Pennsic unattended, but they can't do something productive like attend a frickin' class without someone over 18? How ridiculous is that?

*rereads* Parent or legal guardian? OMFG, the stupidity is compounded.

This makes NO sense. They can roam unattended/unparented, they can spend all their waking hours in the bathhouse (often not in garb, more often bored) but they can't go to A&S unless they have a parent or legal guardian present?

If TPTB want to clean up a problem, give them something to DO that isn't hang out on the porch blocking access to the flushies, not cut them off from one of the few productive things they might try.

Somebody has let the lawyers run amuck. We are so afraid of lawsuits and bad publicity that we are willing to put in rules such as this one that will hinder the positive development of our young people. A&S classes are at the absolute core of our educational mandate, and we're putting up roadblocks because of the very remote chance that something might happen to a young person attending one.

I only wish I was teaching this year, so I could tell them I won't under these rules.

You could just tell them that, anyway.
