Ep 26 LGBT News Transcript

Host: wook77

Wook: This is Wook77 with the LGBT new segment for this month’s Slashcast.

First up is an interesting piece of historical-political news. An author, and former Nixon aide, in his new book alleges that Nixon had a gay affair with a mobster banker. Nixon had a history of homophobic rants and terminating gay employees so I’m kind of interested to see how this plays out.

In Pakistan Shahana Abbas Shani is running for a seat on the provincial assembly of Punjab, the country’s most populous province. This is both awesome and very brave because Shahana Abbas Shani is not only transgender, but is also the president of the transgender advocacy organisation for that country.

The LGBT community has lost an important voice, John Lawrence, of Lawrence and Lawrence vs. The State of Texas has died. Lawrence vs. The State of Texas was the 2003 case that struck down the sodomy laws that criminalised LGBT sexual acts, even in the privacy of their own homes.

Coming on the heels of the full repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell a lesbian couple won the right for the first kiss when a Navy ship returned from overseas. Petty Officer 2nd Class Marissa Gaeta, purchased raffle tickets to be the first person off the ship and kiss her significant other. And surprisingly to her she won; she exchanged a kiss with her partner, Petty Officer 3rd Class Snell.

Are you in an LGBT relationship yourself? You can get married in Cancun, although it’s due to a loophole in the current law it’s still available and there are, at this time, no plans on fixing the loophole. And in fact there is discussion to completely legalise LGBT marriage in these resort towns throughout Mexico and the Caribbean.

The right wing conservative Republican field here in the US just keeps getting weirder and grosser. We’ve got Ron Paul, who not only refused to shake hands with a known gay man, but he also refused to use another gay man’s bathroom. I guess because he thought that gay cooties would transfer from the toilet seat?

Rick Santorum, hey I recommend you Google it, is surging ahead in the polls in Iowa and all because of his supposed Christian values of hate and intolerance.

Michelle Bachman continues to say that no she’s even more crazy with her hate and intolerance as she rants ineffectively and sounds completely crazy.

A Miami gay matchmaker, Paul Angelo, has recently made the argument that bottoms have low self-esteem, and it’s due to being the receptive partner. Not only do I call bullshit, but I’m quite certain that many slashers out there would as well. As any slasher-writer knows bottoming or topping doesn’t influence your self-esteem, just like being the receptive partner in a heterosexual relationship doesn’t influence a woman’s self-esteem. This guy’s a douchebag of epic douchebaggery.

The People’s National Party in Jamaica has won, coming back into power while endorsing gay rights. As Portia Simpson-Miller stated, and I quote:

“Our administration believes in protecting the human rights of all Jamaicans, no one should be discriminated against because of their sexual orientation. Government should provide the protection.”

While awesomeness abounds.

Contrasting this with the news that the Puerto Rican House of Representatives are trying to remove the hate crimes protection from LGBT people in Puerto Rico. I think Puerto Rico can learn something from Jamaica here.

It’s been an up and down month but I’m going to close with some happy news, showing why I think Hillary Clinton is an amazing woman. I will be including a link to a video featuring excerpts of her speech addressing gay rights as human rights. Just listening to it made me tear up. She has a way with words and cutting to the centre of an issue, here I’ll quote again.

Gay people are born into and belong to every society of the world. Being gay is not a Western invention, it is a human reality.

Hillary Clinton, I love you. Thank you for your leadership role in not only showing that women can be effective leaders - and rather awesome - but that gay rights are human rights.
