The problem is most of the people writing those books didn't think magic was real.

Yeah, I got that impression pretty quick, but I made the mistake of hoping I'd find something actually helpful.

Why would they even write these if they didn't even believe in it?

A mixture of reasons. Some of them want to record the beliefs of older times for posterity, a lot just want to make money by playing off people's interest in the subject or desperation, and some want to believe it's real.

Of course, if a book really did have that sort of knowledge, publishing it would render the knowledge useless anyway.

The problem with rituals is they only put out a certain ceiling of power. The more people trying to draw from the same source, the less power there is to go around.
