Nice to meet you... again, I suppose. This seems remarkably unremarkable given this is the first time you've met me but not the first time I've met you...

Anyway, I know where most of the local libraries and book stores are. Given the current state of technology here.

So there's several, huh? That's good.

I don't suppose you mind telling me your name then?

Oh, right, Clare. Clare Edwards.

The libraries are good for the more mundane information of history and technological advancement. Even if most of these latest advancements don't function fully with the current whatever is keeping us here.

Stuff dealing with- well, magic and monsters is mostly fictional. So it won't be the most helpful with things that happen here. Although the stories are still very good, just not very useful right now.

Clare, okay.

The history would help me out. Different places - I need to see how different.

...So the technology here is on the fritz? [this takes him a bit by surprise; he hasn't honestly looked into it much, that's Winry's department]

[but hearing the word 'magic' causes him a very distinct pause] Magic is fictional.

There are definite points where technology is lacking here. Global communication systems not only seem to be down, but seem to be non-existent. I did some testing and the more complicated a device the less reliable it seems to be.

These devices we're communicating on right now. My only theory for how they function is magic. I can explain how they should work, and why those theories are lacking with this. I thought that magic was fictional when I arrived too... but, it isn't.

[At least she can't hear his mantra of 'magic doesn't exist' in his head.]

Alright. Let me hear your theories.

tl'dr SCIENCE! becauseimboring August 31 2010, 17:49:26 UTC

Well, the cellular phone is the spiritual successor of two way radio communication. The limitations on Radio was the number of frequencies you could allot to communication. Original radio phones could only be used in less than a hundred in any given population hub. Which made them kinda useless if a city of millions could only have a hundred or so on radio phones.

Cell phones bypass this by creating a grid of cell site towers. Each one handling a load of phone communication and the frequencies can be reused so long as no two adjoining sites share frequencies. Also advancements in frequencies allow for more frequencies per site. Limiting the problems of previous wireless communication.

The problem here is the communication devices we're using aren't working on the cellular network. The signal strength is uniform in places where usual cell phones would have lower reception. And they don't change as you move from one cell site to another. The services these devices have shouldn't be as perfect as they are, there should be failures to them even on the best days, but they function without any problems at all times.

My theory is, for people like you and me who aren't from social circles with commonplace acceptance of magic we would be more comfortable with something that looks like technology. However any investigation beyond the basics show that this is a front. I think that whoever brought us here wants us to work together, and this is the best way to keep us communicating.

Did that make sense? It's hard to explain this without having access to the internet.

[Ed... doesn't even know. At least he's not all "WTF INTERNET" in her ear]

It... really doesn't. [deep sigh] I'll get back to you after I read up on about half of what you said.

Sorry, I could try to find the right books to help you catch up on what current level technology is? Along with local and global history?

That would be great.
