[1] My old Creative Writing prof, Robert Nelsen, used to tell us:

"What defines a writer is not what you have published in the past or what you are hoping to publish in the future, but whether or not you have written today. If you write today, you are a writer. If you don't, you are not. It is that simple."

This is not a unique position, and likely it's not even something Nelsen came up with, but it's a useful guide and a high standard to live up to. At least for a wannabe like me, just starting out.
