The one place where there are no expectations, no limits and no opinions is his secret place. It was until he had someone to share it with. After the big accident and almost losing their magnae, Eunhyuk brought his dongsaeng to his secret place on the promise that this place would never get out. That this place would be theirs and no one else's. Kyuhyun agreed and off they went to this secret world.
The drive was long and quiet but not uncomfortable. Kyuhyun had slept most of the way, leaning back in his seat staring out at the long endless road. They weren't in the city anymore. There'd be the occasional house every now and then with big patches of open fields in between. Soft music was playing on the radio. Not loud enough to cover their voices if they choose to speak but soft enough that it just melted into the background. Looking at his hyung's side profile, Kyuhyun smiled one last time before he closed his eyes to go back to sleep.
Eunhyuk didn't say anything when he saw Kyuhyun staring at him. He just waited for the magnae to stop and go to sleep. He knew that Kyuhyun must be tired after doing the daily physiotherapy. He knew he'd get in trouble with the others if something happened to their magnae, even if it was something little as Kyuhyun uncomfortable with the shirt he's wearing.
They were getting closer to his secret place. He slowed the car down and parked to the side of the road. He didn't want to disturb Kyuhyun's sleep but he also didn't want them to not have any gas left for the trip back. He cut the engine and turned on the portable speakers, selecting a track from his iPod. He gently placed a blanket that he had placed in the back seats over Kyuhyun.
Kyuhyun looked so fragile sleeping like that. He knows he's skinny but looking at Kyuhyun, the magnae looked so much skinner and paler in comparison.
They didn't have to get back until a lot later. He let Kyuhyun sleep and caught a couple z's himself. They both woke up hours later when the sun was just about to set.
Kyuhyun looked so lost and confused when he woke up, looking around at where he was. Eunhyuk laughed at his dongsaeng and told him to get out of the car, not forgetting to bring the blanket with him. Kyuhyun rubbed the sleepiness from his eyes and obeyed. He got out and followed his hyung. They walked through a tall field of wheat until they reached a tall field of grass. Kyuhyun wasn't sure how long they walked but judging from the where the sun sat, he'd say they walked for at least a good 45 minutes.
It wasn't long until his hyung broke into a sprint and ran towards the tall field of grass, running and spinning around with his hands stretched out like he was going to fly. Kyuhyun smiled at his hyung's childishness but it was a cute sight. Eunhyuk had his eyes closed and he was just spinning round and round in that same spot, head titled up towards the sky. The true look of being carefree and just enjoying the moment, not expecting anything in return.
Eunhyuk stopped twirling and beckoned Kyuhyun closer with a wave of his arm. Kyuhyun leisurely took his time, walking over to his hyung. Eunhyuk grew tired of waiting so he ran over to Kyuhyun and dragged his dongsaeng back to where he was standing mere moments ago. He was laughing and Kyuhyun was smiling with the blanket flapping behind him. They came to a stop and Kyuhyun was panting, trying to catch his breath. Eunhyuk laughed at Kyuhyun, going off at how the magnae needs to exercise more, that he's getting to be as slow as Heechul in the washroom in the morning. Usually Kyuhyun would have said something witty back but he didn't. He liked listening to the sound of Eunhyuk's laughter. It made his heart lighter somehow.
"So what is this place?" Kyuhyun asked. As much as he wanted to continue on hearing his hyung's lightening laughter, it was going to get colder soon when the sun goes down completely. He knows his hyungs are eccentric and do things sometimes without thinking but he hopes this trip has a meaning behind it.
"I'm not sure. I came upon in a few years back. Whatever it is, it's my sanctuary now." Eunhyuk stopped spinning in circles and facing the sky. He answers Kyuhyun, profile to his dongsaeng, and hands in his pockets with his head forward but eyes closed.
Kyuhyun does and doesn't get what Eunhyuk is getting at. He now knows what this place is but he doesn't know why they're here and why now of all times.
Eunhyuk opens his eyes and smiles at Kyuhyun. He takes the steps forward that's separating the two and leads Kyuhyun back to where he was just moments ago.
"It doesn't matter what is this place. It doesn't matter why you're here, in this spot next to me right now," He said gently, answering Kyuhyun's silent question. "Just open your eyes, take it what you see and accept what you see."
Kyuhyun parted his mouth to say something but the long finger against his lips stopped him. Eunhyuk shook his head and pulled his finger away, pressing it to his own lips, mimicking the sign to be quiet. Kyuhyun nodded to show he understood his hyung's signal. They were waiting for something. He was waiting for something.
It didn't take long for the sun to disappear from the night sky and the moon shining in the distance. The stars weren't out tonight but Kyuhyun could see them. They were moving and dancing around him. When one door closes, a window opens. The sun had gone but the moon came. The stars were out of sight but what came in its place was irreplaceable.
They glowed and danced around him. He let go of his hold of the blanket on his shoulders. He took a few steps forward and stared in awe at how many of them there were. The way they moved, the way they shined, they way they brought warmth into his being and they way they're just so beautiful without even trying left him in awe.
Kyuhyun stretched out a hand and felt them flock to his fingers. One landed right in his palm and he smiled. He could feel the heat coming from it. He had never seen a more beautiful creature at night.
"That's who you are Kyuhyun ah. The light may be out right now but when it's your time to shine, you'll glow so brightly that everyone will be blinded by you. Your wings will soar and you'll fly past the Heavens. You'll be back to flying and lighting up the world in no time."
He could hear his hyungs soft whispers behind him. He gets why he was brought here but he couldn't help wondering if this was really it. If this was the only thing his hyung wanted him to see. He could hear the grass get crushed under his hyung's feet. He could hear his hyung move closer to him. He could see a long bony arm move around him and gently removed the creature from his palm, freeing it and letting it go back to its friends.
"They're beautiful."
"They're really are, aren't they?" Eunhyuk had such a bright smile on his face.
Kyuhyun looked at his hyung. It's the first time he's seen his hyung smile like that since the accident. It really was beautiful. "Yeah. They really are."
He felt the blanket get draped over his shoulders. He jumped in surprised, not expecting his hyung to have picked it up. He felt his hand being held and he was shocked. Looking at their joined hands, he wanted to voice out and ask "Why?"
Eunhyuk giggled and looked forward. Letting his eyes travel from one to the next. He didn't give question an answer to his silent question this time.
Kyuhyun didn't let out the sigh he felt bottling up in him. He didn't let his confusion show through. He too looked forward and said nothing. He gently squeezed his hyung's hand and that was it.
Maybe this is another secret between them.
Maybe this is another secret they've come to be.
Maybe, just maybe, it's who they already are.
Or maybe this is another secret that only the fireflies know the answer to.
