Statement by Commissioner Stefan Füle following his meeting with Foreign Minister of Georgia, Maia Panjikidze
Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Štefan Füle today met Dr Maia Panjikidze, the Foreign Minister of Georgia.
They discussed latest developments in Georgia, including the adoption by the Georgian Parliament of a foreign policy resolution, continuing efforts to reform the judiciary and to assure its independence, and moves by the government to reinforce the independence of local government.
Commissioner Füle expressed the European Union’s appreciation of the efforts that are being undertaken by all sides in Georgian politics to ensure a constructive national debate focusing on issues important for Georgia’s future and its citizens rather than personalities.
Commissioner Füle and Minister Panjikidze also discussed preparations for the Eastern Partnership Summit scheduled to take place in Vilnius later this year. Commissioner Füle expressed the hope that the EU and Georgia will complete negotiations on Association Agreement, including a Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area ahead of the Summit.
