I... think that what you say makes so much sense. I like the balance you describe here between listening/empathizing and keeping up with standards. I'll keep this in mind when students start giving me, "Why didn't I pass?" emails.

And... I would have paid good money to see you put that karaoke advice into action. (Me? I wouldn't be caught dead singing alone in front of people, but your advice seems sound in theory.)

I mostly have done it by accident because I always manage to pick songs higher than my range (which, in the U.S., is all songs). The best example is not recent, but in some after-party or other about eight years back, I picked Toto's Africa. I hummed the first few lines in my head and decided it would be slightly uncomfortable, but doable. I forgot, of course, that the chorus was written for chipmunks huffing helium.
