Buffy the Blue Jay hopped from branch to branch, quietly, watching the beetle with keen eyes. She was waiting for just the right moment to swoop down and -
“Caw! Caw caw!”
The bat that had stolen her beetle flapped past her, grinning. “My beetle now, sweetling. Go find your own,” he squeaked.
Buffy flew after him, determined to get her beetle back. “I saw it first!”
“And possession is nine-tenths of the law of the jungle!” The bat dove and rolled.
Buffy dove after it. “Bats aren’t even supposed to hunt during the day, you idiot.”
“Yeah? Well I’m a rebel!”
Buffy stretched her body, streamlining herself for extra speed. “Caw!” She pecked the infuriating bat on the shoulder.
Startled, the bat dropped the beetle, squeaking in indignation. “You! That was uncalled for, that was.”
The beetle scurried off into the underbrush, unnoticed, as the bat snapped its wing out, slapping Buffy and sending her tumbling through the air.
With a shake of her feathers, Buffy turned, and zoomed straight at the bat.
Only to have it disappear before her very eyes.
