It’s the first time he wakes up with her beside him and he can’t even enjoy it.
How long’s he been wanting this? To wake up after falling asleep beside her and have it not be to an empty bed or her scurrying out.
But even awake he can taste their blood in his mouth, feel it in his throat. The horror won’t leave his gut, the pleasure (awful, awful pleasure) won’t leave his chest.
Spike’s dreamed of waking up beside Buffy for years. Dreamed of getting to watch her beside him, of waking up with her warm body beside his. Dreamed of just getting to lie beside her and of her not wanting to leave.
And now it’s happening and he dreams of vicious bloody death.
Instead of marvelling at what an amazing situation this is, and what a perfect moment this should be, at how stupidly, impossibly, unbelievable lucky he is, he’s clinging to a kitten and trying to will himself out of sickness and fear.
But what else could he expect?
