Even with everything, all the bad, all the really bad, all the leaving and gone, Buffy’s okay.

She’s surprised she’s okay, and it takes a little while, but she thinks, really, that she’ll be okay.

They leave Dawn in California, send her back to school. And after Giles’ funeral and will, she meets Xander back at the castle with the book and her scythe.

“Are you sure you want? It can take a long time to fix this sorta stuff. And it might smell forever,” says Xander. “Don’t go to close to that wall.”

She helps Xander with the construction work because there’s no one to explain sudden destroyed work to if there’s another demon attack. It’s good to be doing things. To have a distraction from what went wrong .With just the two of them, the castle feels incredibly lonely, but it’s good to be working.

Willow shows up after two weeks. “I missed you,” she admits. It’s good to hear, even though she looks at her shoes instead of Buffy like she’s sixteen again and only hugs Xander. Between losing her powers and her injuries, Willow isn’t much help with the work, but her just being there makes things feel much better.

“Kennedy and I aren’t together anymore.”

“Oh, Will, I’m sorry.”

“No, it’s… it’s good. It’s for the best.”

And then it’s the three of them again and it’s natural and right. It’s always been the three of them. This is how it’s supposed to be. Even if Willow is mad, even if she’s a wanted fugitive, even if Xander is having some long-distance thing with her sister, it’s still how it’s supposed to be.

The dorms have the least amount of damage and since they don’t have an army to control from the obliterated control room, they start there. They’re almost done with tearing the bedrooms apart when Spike shows up.

She darts down the stairs and meets him outside of his ship on the lawn that used to be the training field. She tugs her dust mask down from her mouth. “Hi.”

“You know I had to talk to Andrew to find where you went?”

Buffy tries not to grin. Maybe she should have left the mask on. “I’m sorry.”

Spike looks behind her at the burned mess of the castle. “This is where you lived?”

“Yeah. It used to look nicer. And have more people living in it. And have useable rooms beside the barn.”

“You’re clearing it out?”

“We’re rebuilding it.”

A load of charred lumber comes tumbling down the chute from the window and clangs into the dumpster below.

“First we have to destroy more of it, though.”

Spike nods and stares up at the window. “Do you want more help?”

Help? Help from Spike? Spike help?

“You want to come back? Back with us?”

He looks back and meets her eyes. “If that’s all right.”

Since she and Willow and Xander have been together, things have been right. Things have been how they’re supposed to be and how they used to be.

And with Spike it will be different and new and still comforting all at once.

“Of course it’s all right.”
