Notes - Just a quick one-shot I did. I was given a prompt via Sister Figure to do Ty Zula, and this is what I came up with. I totally see the pairing in this, but I realize it's very subtle. This is just a vague take I have on why Azula is so frickin batshit. :D

The royal grounds were a common place for children to mingle, but the institution was where they met. Azula had become close to two girls from higher members of the fire nation’s society, and they certainly intrigued her. They were fun to be with, but they were very different from her and each other. Mai was quiet and shy, but had a strong focus on even the simplest task, while Ty Lee was flighty and talkative, and picked up on the smallest move quickly. She wondered sometimes if they would be friends in the years to come, but she had no reason to wonder. These were simple times with simple pleasures.

“You really need to chill out, Azula.”

Ty Lee’s optimism astounded her, but Azula just rolled her eyes.

“I am calm. I won’t fail this test.”

Ty Lee giggled and bat at her friend’s arm.

“Of course you won’t, so relax! It’s the last day of school, and then we can play and have fun all summer.”

“Even a prodigy has to train a lot and pay attention to detail.”

Azula was practically quoting her father. She had earned a special place in his heart, and she wasn’t about to loose it. She might be a princess someday, or at least, she hoped she would be. But then again, what little girl didn’t? Ty Lee just laughed and grabbed Azula’s arm.

“That doesn’t mean you can’t lighten up!”

-

The sun was fierce but refreshing, and the three girls walked side by side out of the institution. Azula couldn’t help but notice that Ty Lee’s face looked so pretty in the sunlight.

“Oh, goodness! Finally summer time! I love summer, don’t you Azula?”

“Yes, I like how warm it is.”

Ty Lee giggled and rolled her eyes playfully.

“There you go again, being super serious.”

Mai sighed.

“I’m just glad I can finally have some fun for once.”

“Oh yeah! So much fun! We can go to the beach, and we can have picnics.”

Mai smiled but didn’t reply. She didn’t have to. The three walked down the stone path happily humming over future plans and bright days. Smiles glowed on each of their faces to the point that Azula didn’t take notice to the soft buzz of passing flies or the gentle wind nestling among the blades of grass. She didn’t realize at the time, but this day was the last she was to ever see a cloudless sky.

-

The dark had never bothered her, even when she was little. Creaks and moans of the elegant architecture had never made her shudder. And the strong voice, suddenly so soft, had never before made her cringe. It was funny how easily the familiar fairy tales had morphed into her newest, coldest fears.

-

A week had passed, and Azula was silent. Her mother escorted her to Mai’s house and waved a nonchalant farewell. She watched the carriage go, feeling like she had lost another chance but wasn’t sure why. She turned and walked up the stairs where Mai and Ty Lee were waiting. Both were mingling in a content boredom until they noticed her arrival. Ty Lee jumped to her feet and ran up to greet her. She hugged Azula warmly, oblivious to the smallest tense beneath her clothes, and held her away by the shoulders. Ty Lee smiled.

“It’s the perfect day for a picnic, don’t you think?”

Azula didn’t answer for a moment, nor smile at her friend’s embrace. She wondered if life was really so fickle as to move on, untouched and unaffected. She stared into the glistening, gray eyes for the longest time before she had her answer. The world never stopped. You rolled with it, or were crushed beneath its thick, humid weight. A trademark smirk took root as she remembered Ty Lee’s most useful attribute.

“Yes, perfect. But I have something better in mind.”

Ty Lee blinked with a mild concerned towards Azula’s odd behavior.

“What could be better then a picnic?”

If one was to amount to anything above a mere puppet, one must hold the strings.

“Why don’t we do some cartwheels?”
