“…Mama?” Gokudera’s voice cracked a little at the end, as if he couldn’t decide whether this was a projected desire of his cracked psyche or a flesh-and-blood protector. The familiar woman held her arms out, her smile kind.
“Hayato, I’ve been looking for you everywhere. I’m alive, baby. Alive.”
Gokudera ran into her arms with a sob, not worrying about mussing his suit or hair or any other trivial details as the great loss of his life was rectified, a stroke of good luck he neither expected nor deserved. But he was proud that he had recognized her the moment she had walked in the door. “Mama…h-how…?”
“Shh, baby, I never died. Not from your father’s plans and not from anything else, but he stopped letting me see you and I didn’t know where you were after you ran away - how could I? You disappeared, and now I find you here, in the place I least expect.”
“I’m sorry, Mama, if you didn’t want me doing this. But the Tenth is a good man!”
“I know.” Her eyes said I forgive you, but her silence said I will never truly approve. Gokudera’s father had made many plans to kill her, and their failure did not take away her hatred of the Mafia. Gokudera chose not to dwell.
“I don’t- remember your name. I was too young.” He admitted in a small voice.
Gokudera’s mother chuckled at his flush of shame and stroked his hair, which was the same color as her own. “My name is Maura Graziella. My mother was Japanese and my father was Italian, so I took an Italian name - but my mother was where I got my looks from. Your grandmother. She was beautiful.”
“You’re beautiful too.” Gokudera breathed reverently. There were crow’s feet at the corners of her eyes but she looked carefree, happy. The laugh lines around her mouth were well-worn, and her hair was still silver, not white.
“That’s because I’ve had Emi with me - Hayato, I want you meet someone.” They turned, and in the doorway was a petite Japanese woman. She nodded and greeted him in accented Italian, and Gokudera was stunned for a moment, because her face - especially the hazel-brown eyes - reminded him strongly of Yamamoto. Gokudera returned her greeting after a moment’s pause, still puzzled about the resemblance. He had spent enough time in Japan that not all Japanese looked the same to him, so if there was a resemblance, it should be real.
“Hayato, this is Yamamoto Emi.” ‘Same family name,’ Gokudera thought. But it was common. “The real reason that your father tried to kill me was that - well, because I didn’t like him. Wasn’t attracted to him.” His mother moved from him to Emi, hugging the Japanese woman from behind. “I’m in love with…well, you understand, don’t you Hayato?”
Gokudera nodded.
“After I chose, your father didn’t like being slighted. So he took you away - but you’re still my son more than his.”
Gokudera opened his mouth to agree, but he was interrupted.
“Okāsan?” The second greeting of ‘mother’ this evening came from a shocked Yamamoto, who had stuck his head into Gokudera’s office to remind him of dinner plans. And then he’d seen his mother.
The woman named Emi saw Yamamoto and stayed inscrutable in appearance, but her voice was slightly higher when she spoke. “Takeshi? What are you doing here? You should be with your father in-”
The duo of mother and son chattered away in rapid Japanese, and even Gokudera had trouble catching a few of their words. His mother was less proficient in Japanese and turned to him for help. “Hayato? What are they talking about - how do you know Emi’s son?”
“Takeshi is the current Rain Guardian of the Vongola,” Emi answered, her Japanese now slower. “Apparently, the Boss of the Tenth Generation is Japanese himself, and our children grew up in the same town, attending the same junior high.”
“What a coincidence!” Gokudera’s mother exclaimed. “Emi hasn’t seen her son in years, because she had to divorce her husband who kept thei - well, anyways, isn’t this a nice reunion?”
Gokudera groaned and covered his face. “Mio dio.” he whispered into his palms. “My first and only steady relationship, and I’m dating my step-brother.”

A/N: I am really sorry for the crack. I could not stop thinking about it in any other way once I thought up this plot. XD But I saw that someone else had taken this prompt, so hopefully you'll get a serious response?
In other news, I wonder if Yamamoto is gonna ask for a double-date after this...
