Sterling, James Clifton
James Clifton Sterling, known by his friends and family as "Cliff,' passed away Monday, July 31, 2006.
Cliff was born Sept. 10, 1918, to Polly and Leabud Sterling in Pine Level, N.C. He was the youngest of seven children. He was always closest to his brother James "Kid" Sterling. These two brothers spent all of their years close, from times in the military to raising families as traveling salesmen and business owners. Cliff was honored to serve his country in the U.S. Army during World War II and attained the rank of sergeant. He was honorably discharged in November 1945.
Cliff met and married Juanita Sterling and together they shared a daughter, Vivian Ann Manning, and a bond of friendship that would withstand divorce and the many miles between Texas and California that separated them. Later, Cliff married Barbara Sterling and they had two children, James "Jim" Sterling and Jennifer Lynn Sterling, both of California. In 1963, Cliff met and married the woman with whom he would share the rest of his life, Monica Marie Sterling of Pocatello, Idaho. They shared more than 43 years of marriage and two children, Jack E. Sterling and Melody M. Sterling, together.
Cliff had an amazing gift for connecting with people both in his personal relationships and in business. He often told stories about his life experiences as a way of meeting people and engaging them with tales of his travels to every state in the union. As a successful traveling salesman, Cliff trained and managed people in the sales of magazines and cleaning products. He, along with his brother, founded Sterling Products and manufactured Sterlings Magic Cleaner.
Cliff moved with his wife and children to Ventura County and settled down to make it his final home in 1966. He and Monica raised three children here. When Cliff became disabled in 1996, he relocated to Camarillo, where he became close to the many kind members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and became a member in 1996. The church members would regularly visit him and listen intently to all of his stories. They all felt that they learned well about the resilience of the human spirit to see him unable to walk but so full of life and never complaining about his limitations.
Cliff touched many lives and is survived by his wife, Monica of Camarillo; daughter Vivian Ann Manning, granddaughter Sandy and great-grandson, Jordan, all of Plano, Texas; son Jim and grandson James, both of California; daughters Jennifer and Melody, both of California; son Jack and granddaughters Sheila and Samantha, all of California; and brother Kid of California
A service for Cliff will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Camarillo, at Los Posas and Lewis roads. A grave dedication with military honors will be made immediately afterward at Valley Oaks-Griffin Memorial Park in Westlake Village. Family and friends will be welcome for a gathering at the home of his son Jim in Simi Valley at the conclusion.
Donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
