The Magic of a Name
Once upon a time, there was a reclusive hunter. He lived on his own, on the outskirts of a quaint little town. He was strong and beautiful, and many of the women found it a shame that he didn’t wish to marry, for they would’ve loved a chance with the black-haired beauty. Little did they know that the very reason he lived outside of the town was because he found everything that breathed positively annoying. Kanda Yuu was as cold as he was beautiful.
One morning, as always, Kanda woke up and prepared his guns and knives, ready to spend a day in the woods. His small abode was perfectly clean, nearly spotless, for he kept everything in top shape. He wasn’t a big fan of extra ornamentation, so his home only held the necessities, as well as a few things of sentimental value.
He as he walked out the door, his eyes were assaulted with early morning light. It wasn’t too strong, thankfully, and it didn’t take long to adjust to. So without giving any thought to how strange the day felt somehow, Kanda walked into the depths of the forests. As he did though, he couldn’t help but notice that, indeed, something did feel different about that day, though he couldn’t quite place it. It didn’t seem bad, though that in and of itself was rarely enough to pacify Kanda. The air seemed to be filled with anticipation, he wondered what the world could be waiting for.
Nothing seemed to be any different than usual when he went out that day. Everything was as peaceful and quiet as always, and there were more than enough animals carelessly frolicking about that he had enough meat by midday to last him the rest of the week and then some. He’d sell the furs to a coat maker who worked in the nearby town, and do the same with any of the extra meat. He always did his best not to waste anything.
A little after his midday break, Kanda once again walked out of his home. However, he didn’t get very far before he noticed a motionless animal a few feet away from his house. It was a rabbit, with a wound near one of its eyes. The fur was an orange color that was more than a bit bright for a rabbit; He could probably get a little extra for its rarity when he sold it. It looked sick however, and he wasn’t quite sure if it had a disease that would cause problems if eaten. Practicality said that he should just move on and let something else pick it off, but something in Kanda’s mind that wasn’t quite practical made him decide to take the creature to the town’s vet; Just to see if it had a problematic disease, he told himself. Kanda was not the type of person who would keep a fluffy wounded rabbit around as a pet, it was simply a money matter.
"It’s fine," Allen, the town’s veterinarian had said when Kanda had shown up at his office. "He’s just fevered because of his wound. Give it a few days and the little guy will be all better." Allen smiled, as he was entertaining the idea of the reclusive Kanda having a pet rabbit. Allen would’ve bludgeoned Kanda if he’d known that he was planning to sell the rabbit to the local butcher and coat maker.
"Hm, so you’ll be all set in a few days?" Kanda asked the rabbit once he got home, though he knew better than to expect an answer. He was alone, not crazy, he didn’t talk to animals or expect them to talk back. The rabbit sat lazily on his bed side table, looking perfectly content to take up residence there besides the hunter. "Guess I’ll just keep you around until then..." Kanda shrugged and walked around, putting out the room’s lamp, before he rested for the night.

A few days after Kanda had found the rabbit, it had healed. It seemed that there would be a permanent scar over its right eye, he hoped that didn’t lower the fur’s value any. He wondered why the injured animal seemed to be making itself at home in his house. It waited for him to come home every day like a dog, helped itself to whatever greenery he had in and around his house, and always slept on his night stand. He also wondered why the injured animal had never once been defensive with him. Actually, it was rather affectionate with him, it made him wonder if maybe it had been domesticated before, and had gotten loose. The little fur ball had a habit of switching from his night stand to his pillow, and if it ever found him just sitting around, not doing anything, it would jump into his lap. It was obviously an attention-seeking type.
Honestly, he was starting to get used to having the thing around too. Some part of his mind wondered if he’d really be able to sell it, and another part of him mind scolded him, telling him "This is why you don’t keep animals; They stay."
Kanda huffed, looking at the furry little beast that was, as always, sitting on his night stand.
"You planning on hanging around much longer? Ya’know, if you’re able you should get the hell out of here before I can sell you." The rabbit twitched its nose, but otherwise did nothing. Kanda hadn’t expected to understand anyway. The rabbit then sunk closer to the surface of the night stand, moving around and getting more comfortable, Kanda decided that would serve as its response to his earlier statement.
"Tch, well if you intend to stay, I suppose I have to name you...." He said, absent-mindedly petting the rabbit between its ears. Kanda couldn’t think of any name that would fit the fluff ball. He pondered over this until he put out the lights for the day, and went back to bed. He cleared his mind and decided the problem could wait until tomorrow. However, just before he slipped through consciousness, a name came to mind and slipped through his lips.
"How ‘bout...Lavi?"

Kanda woke to a loud crash and a yelp. He was immediately on alert; There was actually someone in the world stupid enough to trespass in his house. Whoever it was would pay dearly as soon as he turned on a light-
Just as his feet touched the floor, a lamp was lit. Standing near the lighted lamp was a rather tall red haired man, with a strong build, and exceptionally well toned muscles. His chin-length hair spilt over his right eye, and the left was a brilliant green that swam in the flickering lamp light. There was just one problem with the man: He was naked.
Kanda’s first reaction was to ball up the bedsheet and hurl it at the intruder. He then stood and snarled at the man "Who the hell do you think you are?! And for God’s sake why the heck aren’t you wearing anything?!"
"Well I don’ usually wear anything..." Kanda didn’t want to know that.
"Just....why the heck are you here...?" This person seemed genuinely clueless and rather harmless, so he decided he’d just have to stay calm while dealing with this person.
"Huh? What’cha mean? I’ve been here the past couple of days, remember?" No, Kanda did not remember having a red-haired man around his house ever. The red head looked over to Kanda’s night stand, which he only just realized was in pieces.
"Awe...It broke. I liked that stand..." A ridiculous idea came to Kanda’s mind when he heard that, and it was so silly that he had to sit down and think about why that would even come to mind.
"Who are you...?" Kanda asked, wondering what kind of bizarre answer he would get.
"Come on, you should know this! You just named me a little while ago!" Kanda gave him a blank stare, not remembering the name that had come from him as he’s slipped from consciousness.
"Mou, that’s so mean! I’m Lavi! You took me in a few days ago and named me that a little while ago." Kanda just continued his blank staring, blinking once or twice. This was crazy, it was truly crazy. It wasn’t possible, maybe he’d finally gone insane?
"You mean to say that...you’re the rabbit...that I found a few days ago..." The red head, now properly identified as Lavi, nodded.
"I can prove it too, see?" He said, pushing the hair that was in his face away, revealing a scar that ran down over his eye. Kanda took in all of this very slowly, and when it dawned on him that this was indeed the truth, he passed out.

"Master? Master, are you ok?" Kanda heard a somewhat familiar voice calling for him. His eyes cracked open to see the rabbit boy who he’d woken up to before. Still in nothing but the bed sheets Kanda had thrown at him earlier. Kanda jumped up and immediately went to find some of his larger sized clothes; The rabbit wasn’t horribly large, but he was a bit taller and had broader shoulders than Yuu did. Finding something that would work for the moment, he threw them at the rabbit.
"Clothes. Wear them. Now." He said through gritted teeth, discomfort plain in his voice. "It’s not proper to walk around anywhere without them."
"But I did before. Is it ok for rabbits to be naked?" Kanda hit his forehead.
"Rabbits are animals and have fur and- Oh, for crying out loud why the hell am I explaining this...?!"
"You were a lot calmer before, ya’know that?" Lavi asked, wondering if maybe he’d gotten the wrong impression about the black-haired man.
"That’s because animals are not supposed to turn into humans! It’s strange! Unusual! And how’d you do that anyway? How come you know how to talk, when you never have before? People aren’t born with that ability!" Lavi thought over his answer for a little while.
"Maybe it’s because you named me? I mean, before I didn’t have one, and then as soon as I got one, I turned into a human. Dunno why I can talk though, guess I just learned for listening to you?" Kanda wondered if that could really be it. The name he’d given, did it really have that power? Did all names have that kind of magic behind them?
His mind was taken abruptly from his pondering when he felt strong arms around him. He jumped a little, and looked over to the red head who was hugging him.
"Wh-what are you doing?!"
"Thank you for savin’ me, master Kanda." Kanda was caught off guard by the word "master". He was just the person who owned the house, and Lavi was just a rabbit he’d picked up, there was no master-servant relationship here!
"Why the hell would you call me that?" Lavi cocked his head to the side, as though wondering why Kanda would ask,
"Well, you saved me and kept me, so that makes me your pet, and you my master, right? That’s what the white-haired guy said while he was treatin’ this wound, he said "I can’t believe Kanda has a pet!" and then started chuckling. So I assumed that you’re Kanda, and I’m your pet. Is there anything more to your name, Master?" Kanda marked Allen for death then.
"My name is Kanda Yuu." He answered without thinking, seeing as that was what he was best at. Kanda sighed and put his head in his hands, not sure whether he wanted to laugh or cry about this situation. He’d never get rid of this rabbit-boy, would he? But did he really want to? He had just decided to keep the rabbit, though the circumstances weren’t exactly the same anymore...
Lavi nuzzled Kanda’s neck affectionately before placing a light kiss on the raven haired man’s cheek. Kanda’s face colored at this, and he turned to look at Lavi curiously.
"I’m glad it was you who found me and kept me, Master Yuu! I promise to be a good pet for you!" Kanda smirked amusedly, wondering if the rabbit knew what he was saying. He never thought he’d be keeping this kind of pet.
