They Say We're Lonely When We're Really Just Alone

He hated this place, despised it with all of his being. Just when he’d finally gotten used to the Asian Headquarters, they sent him to the Main Branch. He’d been sent there with a girl, Lenalee, she was the only person he’d really consider a friend, because while he hated just about everyone and everything, he found it impossible to hate the young Chinese girl with the sad eyes who was always confused and looked to him for help. But when they got to the Main Branch, someone had decided that she was unstable, and his one companion had been taken away, and denied friends and contact with people outside of the science department.

Kanda was alone in this damned building. He had no idea how to change that because he just plain wasn’t sociable, he couldn’t reach out to people, he didn’t have that ability. He didn’t know where anything in the tower was, he had wandered a little too far and ended up lost, so instead of wandering some more just to end up more lost, he had just let himself go in the nearest vacant room. It was all he could do, just sit there in the dark and curse the world for making him an exorcist and taking him from his family and try desperately not to let himself cry.

"Hm? Is someone in‘ere?" A voice came from the door. It was light, a little accented, and sounded about as young as his own voice. Kanda didn’t say a word, he couldn’t be seen from the door and he didn’t want to be seen. He didn’t want to be found, especially not like this. If he was just quiet, then that person would leave, whoever it was.

He heard footsteps and cringed, while trying to make himself as small as possible. He put his face to his knees and hoped that he would be over-looked, or whoever it was would see that he didn’t want to be disturbed and kindly pretend that they’d never seen him. Of course, he’d never been all that lucky in the first place.

Yuu felt a hand on his head; It was small, maybe a little bigger than his own. The pressure from the hand was lifted for all of a second, and then it was back; He was being patted on the head.

"Don’t worry, it’ll be ok-don’t know what’s wrong- but it’ll be ok." Kanda looked up just a bit, just enough so that he could glare over his knees. What kind of idiot tries to console someone when they have no idea what’s wrong?

"Go. Away." His voice was steely and left no room for argument, yet the infuriating child in front of him just shook his head and sat down in front of him. The boy was, as he suspected, around his age. He had fiery red hair that spilt over a loosely tied bandana. The right half of his face was covered in wrappings that looked pretty fresh, he must’ve just gotten them changed. His uncovered eye was large and expressive, a beautiful bright green.

"So what’s eatin’ ya kid?" The red head asked, Kanda scowled against his knees.

"Don’t call me kid." Kanda murmured darkly. What right did a kid have to call him a kid?

"Ya make for a real lonely picture, just sittin’ here by yourself, ya know?" The red head continued on as if he hadn’t heard Kanda speak at all.

"Shut up." The intruder sighed, wondering why the heck he was sitting on the cold and uncomfortable floor of a dark room with a kid he didn’t know who obviously wanted to be alone.

Guess my curiosity just won’t let me leave ‘im...

"Just sittin’ around here and bein’ all sulky ain’t gonna help ya at all. You need ta get out and socialize, be friendly, all that good stuff. The last thing ya wanna do when feeling lonely is be alone."

"OH JUST SHUT UP!" Kanda suddenly yelled, quickly standing up. He glared down at the unknown boy with angry eyes. "I’m perfectly fine being by myself and I don’t need anyone! I’ll stay here the rest of my life if I damn well please and I’ll be fine. So you can just take your pretty speech and GET. OUT!" Kanda was not in the mood to listen to motivational speaking. He was not in the mood to be with anyone at all, because people either left him or he left them. There was no point in knowing anyone if things were like that.

The boy’s one eye blinked, well that was a strong reaction. It was obvious that this kid wouldn’t be ok alone at all, that he’d probably just spend the rest of the day sulking here for whatever reason until someone else found him or night time rolled around. Getting to his feet, the red head smiled warmly at the boy in front of him, secretly happy to see that he was just a bit taller.

"Maybe that’s true, and maybe it’s not. I don’t think I wanna let you find out though. So I’ll just stay right here with ya, until you feel like gettin’ outta this dark room. Then we’ll leave together, and get somethin’ to eat. How does that sound?"

Kanda huffed loudly, his breath displacing his bangs. He glared at the other some more before crossing his arms and sitting back down.

"It sounds like you’re patronizing me or something." He said angrily, however he stopped telling the other to leave after that. After a while, he even decided to actually talk to the boy, instead of just yelling at him. He wouldn’t talk much on his own though, as the red head soon realized, so he constantly worked to get the dark-haired boy to talk.

Eventually, Kanda felt better, though he was loathe to admit it, even to himself. So, he scowled unhappily and stood up, motioning to the other that he was leaving, and that he expected the red head to follow.

Getting up, the red head stopped Kanda before he could move to the door.

"Um... we kinda forgot somethin’..." He said, wondering how he’d managed to forget such an important question. Up until just a second before, it hadn’t seemed all that important. Kanda raised an eyebrow. "We forgot introductions." Kanda put a hand over his face, wondering about the same thing the other had just a moment before.

"Well, I’m Lavi, just Lavi. Whatta‘bout you?" The red head, now properly identified as Lavi, said, holding out his hand. Kanda bowed his head for a second, instead of shaking the other’s hand.

"I’m Kanda Yuu."

"Well, Kanda Yuu, next time you decide to stay in a dark room like this, I’ll find ya again." Kanda felt heat rush to his face, and he was glad for the darkness of the room.

"Tch, I don’t need anyone to find me."

"Maybe, but I’ll still find you when you’re in the dark."
