Once Upon a Feeling

It's not often that a movie effects me soo much that it touches an unnamed place in my soul and brings me to tears.  There have been a few - my favorite being Garden State.  Tonight, I got to add another movie to the list.  John and I went to see the new Fox Searchlight movie out called Once.  I had pretty high expectations going into it because the movie - is basically music with a visuals to go along with it.  Okay, maybe not the best description of the movie but you probably get the gist.  The official synopsis is that Once is the story of an Irish singer/songwriter who finds a muse in a Czech flower seller and aspiring pianist he meets on the streets of Dublin.

Anyway, John and I sat through a hour and some odd minutes of music and human interaction that told a beautiful yet heartbreaking story.  The music was awesome and the overall tone of the movie was just a perfect balance of sweetness and heartbreak with a little hope and wonder.  As John kept repeating afterwards, the movie was just...real.  On the way home, we drove a good 5 to 10 minutes saying nothing.  Just sitting with our own thoughts.  After a brief discussion, we got home and I just cried.  I can't even tell you why I cried but honestly, the songs telling the story just touched me in a way that all I could do was cry.  They just spoke to me.

I know a lot of people may see this movie and like it but never walk out of the theater feeling half of what I feel tonight.  But for me, music is my primary way to communicate feelings and thoughts and emotions when I just don't have the words.  And for whatever reason, the songs featured in Once touched that place in me that holds longing and dreams and unaccomplished things.  Maybe later I will be able to actually process the feelings the movie stirred up.  For now, I guess I will just listen to the songs (via official movie site) and just live in them.
