Okay, you know how in the introduction to the movie version of The Fellowship of the Ring, it shows the battle at Barad-dûr, when Isildur cuts the Ring from Sauron's finger and destroys him? And then Elrond yells at him him to throw the ring into the fire and destroy it (being that Sammath Naur, the Chamber of Fire in the heart of Orodruin, was close at hand)...
Which, obviously, he doesn't do. Isildur keeps the ring, and is totally irresponsible with it, ultimately getting killed and the Ring is lost until Gollum finds it. Way to go, Elrond. You totally handled that one. Good job.
But... I was ust thinking about how much Elrond sort of dropped the ball.... but then when I looked it up - it's not just Elrond Half-elven who was there. In the story (but not in the movie), Círdan the Shipwright was there, too. Arguably two of the most important Elves who ever existed in Tolkien's universe. So they're both standing there. And somehow, neither of them just clotheslines Isildur and gets rid of the Ring.
Really? Neither of you? I mean, it's not like Círdan was some sort of n00b.
So here's how I think the conversation went down.
Elrond: Destroy the Ring!
Círdan: Isildur, destroy the Ring!
Isildur: Fuck you guys. I'm keeping it. I cut it off and I'm keeping it.
Elrond: ....I guess I can't think of anything that could go wrong.
Círdan: Yeah, he'll be responsible with it. You'll be responsible with it, right?
Isildur: Dude, am I ever irresponsible?
Elrond: ...okay, whatever.
Círdan: Lol. Good luck with that.
And then Isildur dooms the 3rd Age, gets killed and ends up in a ditch, the Ring gets lost, and we chalk up another one for Morgoth.
