. // Leave the World Up on a Shelf.

Min’s eyes crack open to the blinding sunlight; they immediately snap shut as he traps in the darkness, preparing for another jam-packed day. He would have rolled off the bed and already be well on his way to getting ready if it hadn’t been for Yunho who practically attacked him. Leader-shi lands with an “Oomph!” right on top of Min as the bed creaks and shakes a bit in protest. Eyes snap wide open as the younger finds his cheeks being tainted a light shade of pink.

It’s pretty hard to keep a straight face with another being just inches away. “Good morning sunshine~” Yunho calls; unfazed at all by the sheer millimeters separating him from the younger boy. Normally, Changmin would have retorted to that corny line with a sarcastic remark, but he was having difficulty breathing because they are so close.

“Yunho…” he says blandly, making the older boy frown mockingly.

“Get up princess, your carriage awaits you.”

“Oh really now, so I’m a princess with a carriage? I thought I was ‘sunshine’ a minute ago.”

“You are… um, a princess that shines with radiance who… er, owns a carriage.” And Min can’t help but scoff good-naturedly when the older boy puts on an expression as if he won the lottery or something.

“Please hyung, stop talking like that or I’ll REALLY get sick.”

Yunho pushes up against Min’s shoulder, all pouts and whines, “Aw come on Minnie~! Don’t be an old man!”

It was almost as if yesterday didn’t happen; as if they never kissed.

There’s a clattering of utensils as they finish up the breakfast Jaejoong so generously made. Yoochun’s making jokes; everyone’s laughing but no one’s smiling. Min notices that they are shooting him looks, worried glances camouflaged by a sip of milk or a spoonful of eggs.

The looks keep up even when they are in the studio, amidst a tight schedule and all five of them are running everywhere. It’s sometime between the third and fourth photo shoot, sometime after the acapella practice, when the managers notice Changmin and Yunho are missing.

\\

“MIN-AH! Would you hurry up?! We are gonna get caught and slaughtered, if not by our manager-hyung and the higher ups then the fangirls will take us down to the grave.” Yunho’s running ahead, on the side of some road, smiling just like the good old days.

Changmin’s trailing behind with a look of confusion on his face as he paces himself to remain a few steps behind, “Where are we going hyung? Aren’t we supposed to be doing the promotion activities?!”

Yunho does a twirl of some sort, carefree like the persona of Jung Yunho which Changmin rarely gets to see, so that he’s about-face and directing his delightful gaze at his dongsaeng. “We are going on our own version of a Tokyo Holiday, just… not in Tokyo and it’s really not a holiday.”

“You know,” Min falls in step with the boy walking backwards, “you make no sense.”

There’s that laugh again; Yunho turns on his heel and reaches back to catch hold of Min’s wrist. “Do I ever?” He pulls rashly, and for some reason they are running down that paved road, a mess of pounding feet and hearts.

“Really hyung,” Min says wearily, eyeing the bright shiny lights of the attraction before them, “of all the places you could have chosen for us not to be caught… your brain comes up with this piece of logic?”

Yunho yells something over the noise of the roller-coasters and he beckons the younger to follow him through the gates. When Changmin gets close enough to hear what Yunho is saying, he realizes he is once again being called an old ma-“OH! COTTON CANDY!”

Changmin is snapped rudely out of his thoughts as he catches the flicker of movement he knows is Yunho darting for the cotton candy guy. The older boy comes back with a huge grin and a stick that he promptly starts licking. “Are you… seriously trying to lick cotton candy?”

“What! I eat it my way, you eat it your way. Here.” And without warning Min finds a swab of the sugary fluff melting against his lips. Yunho points towards the bumper car station and sprints ahead, ignoring Min’s call that they are going to get run over by fangirls. Halfway there the stick of cotton candy has transferred to Min who is taking bite after bite, too busy to tell Yunho that he is wrong: they are not safe even if it is during school hours.

Well, the station is noticeably empty, only a few mothers with their children… and maybe a few kids playing hooky. The people there notice them, call to them, but for the most part they are harmless. The stick is all melted away and lands into the garbage, with Min and Yunho each climbing into a car.

And so it starts.

Min is in his car, laying back as the thing moves under him, thinking about things he’d rather just forget. He goes to heave another heavy sigh when his car is met with a violent collision from behind. His body lurches forward and he turns his head just in time to see Yunho zooming past with deafening laughter and a thumbs-up sign. Sure, Shim Changmin was depressed and heartbroken, but he was not about to be beat in a car of bumper cars.

Around the ninth or tenth crash, Min starts realizing that their turn is already past the time-limit but somehow still continuing. He also notices that everyone’s gone, and it’s just them and the staff. Those thoughts stall him for a moment, pulling images of the night before back into his mind. But before he has time to digest that, time to think, he sees Yunho driving at him full speed for another head-on smash.

In the nick of time Min turns the wheel and he turns away, laughing as he catches a glimpse of Yunho crashing into the wall and cursing profanely. Yunho keeps him busy, his mind occupied, with the numerous and quick-witted maneuvers of his car. They are chasing each other around, turning this way and that as their cars hit straight on and they fall all over their seats.

Min’s starting to get tired and he slumps in his seat. That’s when he hears Yunho singing-screaming, “LALALALA CHINGU YA!” and he unconsciously joins in for the ‘HAHAHA’ part. They bump one more time before a truce is called and the vehicles slide to the side, with Yunho still in his car rocking out to the song. Min gets out first, extending a hand to Yunho as he pulls the boy out. His hand hangs in mid-air as he watches Yunho head-bang to the ridiculous lyrics, his face as serious as ever. Yunho grins at him, taking the offered leverage then jumps out of the car and onto Min with an extra loud ‘HA’ right in the younger boy’s ear.

Min’s explosion of laughter catches even himself off-guard.

They spend the next few hours or so running from of roller coaster to the next, stopping occasionally to catch a quick snack or hide behind a wall from a group of high-school girls. Currently, they are pressed against the rough texture of the red brick building, watching the mob of girls walk past as they struggle to regain their composure and stop laughing. When Min judges the enemy to be a safe distance away he runs to the next coaster with his hyung in tow.

They are waiting in the barely existent line when Yunho’s phone rings for the umpteenth time and reality slaps them like a bitch. Min can tell from the ringtone that it’s their manager. Yunho locks eyes with him for a moment, both of them glancing at the worker who is telling them it’s their turn, and gingerly ejects the battery. He slips the thing back into his pocket, taking a few steps towards their seat.

The ride goes up, slowly, step by step, before the front of their car lurches forward and pulls them down into a series of loops and twists. They are being flipped upside-down and Yunho pokes him, “THE CAMERA MIN. MAKE A POSE! A POSE!” The younger boy turns to see Yuhno with his hand at his chin, an exact replica of his Mirotic rap, and follows suit. They zoom past the little device and can vaguely hear a distinct click before letting their arms fall. Yunho’s having the time of his life and Changmin can’t help but feel a little smile trying to push through. Their car slams back into the station and they rock forward, out of breath and light-headed as they walk through the exit.

Yunho leads Min to the stand to pick up their photos, laughing all over himself as he drags the younger boy along. He snatches up their photo from the batch and shoves it right into Min’s face, complete with a loud comment about how ridiculous the younger boy looks. And certainly, the picture is… unique.

Min’s clutching the photo tightly in his hands, exchanging insults with the older boy, as they walk towards their next destination. He spots the ferris wheel a ways off and figures Yunho is headed there. He runs ahead in that direction but is pulled back abruptly. He finds the two of them face to face with the older boy leaning over him; Yunho’s hand is resting on the wall behind Changmin. The beating of his heart is deafening and Min diverts his eyes. Yunho leans even closer and Min thinks his heart will burst. A mob of chatter passes and he can see from the corner of his eye that it’s a group of teenagers. He’s willing them to walk on and not notice when one girl stops in her tracks, “Hey guys, isn’t that Dong Bang Shin Ki? Yunho-shii and Changmin-shii?”

By now the younger boy’s face is a brilliant shade of red and he can only hope to come up with a good explanation for their, ah, positions. “Shit,” Yunho mutters, a smile playing on his lips, “they found us.” Changmin wanders how many times today he has been pulled and dragged from place to place at lightning speed. This makes number one hundred and one, he guesses.

Yunho’s screaming in glee as he commands them to ‘charge’ and to ‘run for your life’. Changmin’s tripping all over himself from the sudden movement, but the “KYAA HOMG. OPPA. I LOVE YOU” behind him causes Min to shift upright and run for his life. They arrive at the ferris wheel, breathless, and upon seeing the advancing mob the worker quickly ushers them to the front of the line and closes the gates just as the two make it in.

His hyung is bent over his seat, doubled over with laughter and Min feels it catching on despite his breathless state. “Min, play a game with your hyung ok?”

“What game?” Min’s slumped in his seat, pulse finally sedated and cheeks flushed with fatigue.

“The ‘I love you more than’ game.”

“Uh, what?” Min shoots a look across to his hyung.

“I love you more than basketball.”

“Um… hyung?”

“I love you more than… HOT CHOCOLATE ON A WINTER’S DAY!”

“Hyung…”

Yunho grins, “What? Is our little Minnie shy? Let hyung make you feel better.”

Changmin groans as his head pounds, “Please hyung, spare me the grease. I get enough of it from Yoochun hyung sexing up Junsu-hyung every morning. The only difference is he’s screaming.”

The older boy rocks back into his seat with laughter. Changmin sighs as he looks out the window of their car. “Seriously Min, look at me and tell me I’m not gorgeous.”

Min looks right into that playful smile and replies flatly, “Oh, you are. The interior of your brain is gorgeously screwed up.”

“WHAT! How can you doubt my sanity that is so-obviously there.”

“Hyung, I’m being serious here, are you sure you don’t need medication?”

Greasy smile is a go. “Are you sure you don’t need some hot loving babe?”

“AH GAWD.”

“MIN. CHANGMIN. CHOIKANG CHANGMIN. SHIM CHANGMNIN,” Yunho calls, being blatantly ignored. He gets up then scoots into his dongsaeng’s seat, rubbing up against the younger boy. Min squirms in vain to get away, feeling each distinct jab of Yunho’s finger as the older boy pokes him. “OY!” Poke. “OYYYY~!” Poke. Poke. “Look at me!!” Poke. Poke. Poke. “HEY! TALL BOY!”

Changmin can’t help but laugh at the last comment, so he turns to look at his hyung. Bad move.

Even Yunho himself is taken aback by how close they are when Min turns his head. He blinks a bit as the boy’s nose taps his own. “Um,” he says. Changmin’s blushing again and makes a move to turn away but Yunho stops him. “Min,” his voice is low. “How do you feel about me? And no wise-cracks because I’m being serious here.”

“I don’t know… you’re a hyung I look up to?” Somehow the clouds outside are really fascinating.

Yunho looks down, heart falling a bit, “So that’s it huh?”

Min can sense the hurt in the question. He reaches for Yunho’s arm to stop the boy from turning away. “It’s not.” Yunho shoots a questioning look. “I’m not really sure hyung. I just broke up with Soohyun and it’s been so long since I’ve been this happy, truthfully. I don’t know anyone who makes me feel alive like you do. Hyung, my heart’s gonna burst and I’m going to die from cardio-malfunction. I’m sure I feel something, but at the same time I’m afraid of feeling something. I think: what if it’s just because I’m lonely? What if I’m using you as a rebound? I’m not 100% percent sure about any of this, but I know that I don’t want to use you or hurt you. I would never be able to forgive myself. How am I supposed to answer you when my mind can’t even wrap around exactly what I’m feeling?”

Yunho remains silent for awhile, looking down at the younger boy, “You know… it’s a bad habit to answer a question with another question.” He turns to walk back to his seat but he finds he can’t go anywhere; Min’s fingers have a death grip on his sleeve. He looks up at the clouds. “I’m willing to wait.”

Changmin looks up, taking in the older man’s silhouette. He wants Yunho to turn around and look at him. “But it’s not fair to you. What if-“

The car shakes a bit when Yunho whips around and leans in close. Min’s eyes go wide as he focuses in on the man before him, just a breath’s space away. “You really think too much. Sometimes you need to just forget everything and say ‘fuck you world’ loud and clear so everyone knows that you don’t give a damn. Sometimes you just need to shove reality into a shelf somewhere; maybe you could push hard enough so it tumbles into the dusty void beneath, slamming against the wall until it falls into the silent darkness. Min, think about yourself for once.”

“Practice what you preach hyung.”

“What do you mean?”

“You think we don’t see you tiring yourself out asking us how this is or that is? You think we didn’t see you struggling every day to live up to that stupid label of a ‘leader’ when all this began? Hyung, you’re too kind and my conscience wouldn’t let me live it down if I ever hurt you.”

Yunho sighs, bowing his head, “You are always one to talk big aren’t you?”

Min looks down, “Huh?”

Yunho whips his head up, wistful smile pulling at his lips, “Because you are so the meanest soul in this universe. And, what do you think you are -untouchable?”

“I just-“

“Don’t think, just feel. You don’t have to calculate your every move with me; I’m not so fragile that I’d break.”

“I don’t know.”

“What if you know but you’re just denying it?”

“I-“

Yunho closes in and their lips touch.

Min’s surprised, taken aback, fingers twisting into the fabric of the older boy’s shirt as they kiss. “Wait,” he breathes, faltering as Yunho just kisses him harder. He feels the searing trails in wake of Yunho’s tongue, feels the older boy claiming him with his lips.

They are pushed up against the wall of the small cart, Min’s hands splayed across the expanse of Yunho’s back, pulling him closer. Their tongues intertwine and heat surges through their bodies. Min moans into the kiss, mewling to Yunho’s touch as the older boy runs his hand through Min’s hair.

Then Yunho leans away, leaving Min to reach forward for more of the older boy’s warmth.

He stares into eyes that are transfixed on his own features, spots the confusion and the passion that flashes though the younger’s face. Min’s a mess of swollen lips, shallow breaths, and loose clothing.

They ride the ferris wheel a couple more times, hip to hip and chest to chest.

\\

They walk out of the amusement park that day, hands clasped together and heads to the sky.

Reality is on some dusty shelf somewhere, hidden away and temporarily forgotten.
