neatly folded cardboard, sealed with red hearts & kisses will tell thirty - twenty-six after the typos & the i-don’t-like-my-writing’s - people how much i love them. valentine’s day, like everything else, has gotten so complicated. my three year old brother scribbled, “to my friend. love, johnnie” on twenty-four finding nemo cards; one for each & every friend he has, his entire pre-school class. he was done in fifteen minutes & i was left at my dining room table, with the same finding nemo cards, contemplating who to give them to. really i was shuffling through the ‘friends’ that would be offended if they didn’t get a tangible ‘i love you’ & then neatly i wrote their name & mine with a few x’s & o’s to clutter things up. while most of the cards were sincere & to friends i love with all my heart, the last few were done simply to avoid drama. call me terrible but i’ll do just about anything to avoid petty, unnecessary drama.

i guess growing up - if you will - is realizing that there’s more to love than heart shaped boxes & dozens of roses. although both may be nice, they don’t compare to a sincere ‘i love you’ or a passionate kiss; but then again, i’m only fourteen & i haven’t experience either.
