Pick 15 pieces of music that you have been an active part of rehearsing and performing (singing, playing, conducting, etc.) that have made an impact on your life, either because of the piece itself, the people you performed it with, the conductor you played/sang under, etc. and what group you performed it with. We all know music impacts our life - which performances impacted you?
1. Irish Jig, anonymous. Music In Our Schools concert, 1997. [First solo, ever. I thought I was going to pass out]
2. Suite for Winds, Lefebvre. TRYPO Wind Quintet, Winter 2001. [First quintet concert, first time I felt comfortable as a chamber player and solid in my performance.]
3. Night on Bald Mountain, Mussorgsky. Three Rivers Young People's Orchestra, Winter 2002. [First time I ever got just...swept away in the music. One of my favorite performances, ever.]
4. Godspeed, Melillio. PMEA District 1 Honors Band, 2003. [First time I played English horn/played an English horn solo for a concert. You can hear my breath shaking on the recording.]
5. Abrahm's Pursuit, Holsinger. PMEA District 1 Honors Band, 2003. [Say what you will about Holsinger and his possible lack of talent. Abrahm's Pursuit, in both listening and playing, will KICK your ASS.]
6. Bercuse and Finale from the Firebird, Stravinsky. PMEA District 1 Honors Orchestra, 2004. [Kika's bassoon solo was trancendental. I almost missed my own solos because I was trying not to cry. And those horn rips at the end of the finale...just amazing. First piece of music to make me weep from beauty while I was playing it.]
7. Hey Baby, Bruce Channel. North Allegheny Marching Band, 2001 - 2005. [If you weren't there, you won't get how awesome and bonding this song is. Just...man. I think about Hey Baby and I start to wish I was back in marching band and high school.]
8. Carry On Wayward Song, Kansas. NAMB, 2001 - 2005. [Pure marching band. Pure music nerd partying. Pure awesome. This song summarizes my high school years.]
9. Heart and Soul, Carmichael. SU Oboe Department, SU Music Department Convocation, Fall 2005 [might be spring 2006?]. [So. Much. Fun.]
10. Air et Danse Bacchanale from Samson et Delilah, Saint-Saens. Syracuse University Orchestra, Fall 2005. [The first time I really performed a piece that I'd loved for years and years. Those amazing measures of tympani rocking out and then horns coming in are still some of my favorite moments ever, in music.]
11. Sinfonia, Heiden. Syracuse University Wind Quintet, Fall 2007. [I felt confident as a good player among other good players for the first time at college. First SU quintet piece I can listen to with some pride.]
12. Libertango, Piazzolla. SUWQ, Spring 2008. [Six minutes of so-fast-you-can't-breathe tango glory. One of the most fun pieces I've ever played.]
13. Trio pour piano, hautbois et bassoon, Poulenc. Janna, Richie and I, Janna and my junior recital in March 2008. [One of my favorite pieces ever, played with awesome players and friends. What more could you ask for in a recital?]
14. Imaginary Landscape No. 5, Cage. Performed/reimagined by me for the class The Music and Theory of John Cage, Spring 2009. [It took so much work, but I finally, finally was able to do it. Imaginary Landscape No 5, created with parts of his Sonatas and Interludes, Music for Piano, and Garageband. The feeling of accomplishment was incredible.]
15. Syracuse University Alma Mater and Sigma Alpha Iota Chorale. Shannon Kane's funeral, Spring 2009. [So much love, and so much grief, all wrapped up with more feeling than I could hold inside me.]
