A Minimal Requirement

My next home will have some minimal requirements, and one of these involves the laundry facilities. It is transparently obvious that the people who design American homes have never washed their own clothes. In homes I have visited in Asia and Europe, the washer and dryer are often in the kitchen, or in an alcove right off of it; they have washing machines there where you hook a hose up to the kitchen sink, and that provides the water supply.

Having just come back from Ireland, I'm aghast all over again how much energy we waste here in North America. In Ireland, you have to flip a switch to activate outlets, and there's typically another switch to turn on the hot water. Much more resource efficient...

Also, the main storage for dishes used every day should not be above the dishwasher. Although that may be less of an issue for people of average height or taller.

I looked at a house once that had the laundry room just off the kitchen. I loved it that aspect...so convenient. We didn't buy it, though:(

However, our washing machine now DOES leak a lot. Well technically it's not the washer, it's that little sock thing that we keep at the end of the outflowing water hose, to catch the lint before it goes down the drain. Darn sock thing springs a leak after ~3 uses because I keep buying cheap stuff, and water ends up spraying everywhere...
