This fic has eight-year-old James waiting alone in the hospital to see if his mother will live after being shot. A young, friendly doctor's son, Jack, takes it upon himself to reassure this lost little boy. James tries to reconcile what he knows of guns from the movies and what he's just witnessed. Even though this is an AU, still a nice little snapshot of a pivotal moment in Sawyer's life.

One day, he catches a glimpse of a woman whom he thinks is also on the same terms with death. Written for the same ficathon, although the characters don't quite meet. Completely true to what we know of both Sawyer and Kate, who can't let go of the ghosts of their past.
