i love long fic, and i also love AU's done right, so naturally, i thought it was a good idea to combine the two!

summary. AU. Father Samuel Murphy of the St. Thomas Aquinas Parish has found himself running from hell fire hot on his heels all his life, and when he meets the mysterious green-eyed confessor from his dreams, he finds that sometimes there’s no way around the road between nowhere and Hell.
read this. this story seamlessly shifts the essential parts of sam and dean into another world. priest!sam is a revelation (ha!) and the sexual tension is delightful. the ending will leave you content, like everything is as it should be.

summary. Stargate Atlantis AU. Doctor Sam Montgomery knew the Pegasus galaxy was going to be an interesting place...
read this. totally wonderful crack AU. if you're a fan of SGA, you'll enjoy the hell out of this, and if you're not, the writing style is enough to make you fall in love with it even with no prior knowledge of the show.

summary.AU. Azazel has given his favorite son a task: worm his way into the confidence of a hunter. It sounds simple, but Dean Winchester just might be more than Sam can handle.
read this. i'm always fascinated by AUs wherein sam or dean grew up in the hands of azazel, and then meet as adults. this story is a fascinating, well-told version of that trope that plays on canon and themes of identity and loyalty and the usual winchester issues.

summary. AU. Futuristic. Captain Winchester doesn’t like people messing around in his mind. He’s had some run-ins with telepaths and he hates them all. Too bad he's been paired up to work with Sam Wesson, one of the highest rated Telepaths in the Tel Unit.
read this. so i might have cheated, technically, since
wendy recced this on her journal a couple of days ago, but i read it on sunday night (staying up well past my bedtime to do so) and became obsessed with it, so i'm reccing it here. the world building is fantastic, and the authors capture the essence of these characters (and their epic love, of course) in totally different circumstances. also? snarky!dean is HOT.

summary.Season 1 AU. Ross Christopher Winchester knows three things to be true: that his father, John, is a hero, that he's going to be the best hunter in the goddamn world, and that his two older brothers are in love with each other and have always been in love with each other. A re-telling of Season 1 where The Winchester Boys mean Dean and Sam and Ross, where John is still missing, where Mary and Jess are still crispy-fried, and where Dean and Sam are still obsessed with one another...
read this. warning, warning - this is a work in progress. but i had to rec it because if you're not reading it, you should be. if you don't like WIPs, bookmark it for future reading. the author is a master of writing OMCs, and the AU she's created is so engrossing that you forget it's an AU.
and because i gave you a work in progress, have a bonus J2 long AU!

summary. For seven months, Jensen Ackles, a once successful, young attorney, has been a prisoner at the Oswald State Correctional Facility. In that time, he thought the man he once was had disappeared forever. But when he gets a new cellmate named Jared Padalecki, he finds he had no idea just how deep the hole goes in the land of Oz.
read this. this J2 AU of the HBO television show "Oz" is totally fucked up in the best possible way. the author really gets into the psychology of the characters and their dysfunctions, as well as the awful environment of the correctional facility. this will grab you by throat from the beginning, and not let go.
