summary. Rogue wildlife attacks? Check. Virulent, incurable pandemic? Double check. Relentless string of natural disasters? Check, check, check. Dean's got it hard enough dealing with the collapse of modern society, so imagine his dismay when he goes to Stanford Law to fetch the brother he's been painfully in love with for most of his life and finds that brother happily married. When Sam, Dean, and Jess set off across the country to find their dad, it's all they can do just to stay alive, much less stay true to each other.
read this. As a fan of dystopian settings, kickass women, and survivalist stories, I found this to be an utter treat. The horror and adventure are superbly written and the relationships between Sam, Dean, John, and Jess work well within the context of the plot, which left me more than satisfied in the end.

summary. The University of Chicago's annual Scavenger Hunt is legendary for its eclectic and hard-to-obtain items (e.g., one thousand origami cranes, a trebuchet launching a pineapple over a statue, an interpretive dance of the Thirty Years' War) and for the extremes that people will go to over a long weekend to find them. Starting from rival teams and at odds with each other, Jared and Jensen must work together to defeat a common enemy and maybe end up winning something more than a game.
read this. One of my best friends went to UChicago and participated in scav and I've always wished I could have too, so I jumped on this as soon as it was posted! It did not disappoint! A quick, fun read with lots of banter, a team to root for, characters that make logical decisions, and lots of wacky shenanigans make this a memorable story.

summary.Jensen serves as the young sheriff of Morgan Falls, a town in the middle of nowhere that never has much happen. Until the residents start to turn, becoming violent and attacking one another. While trying to manage the chaos, Jensen is concerned with tracking down his neighbor, Jared, who's been hauled out of town with others in the quarantine. As Jensen becomes more desperate, those around him are clueless to his obsession, and he begins to recall how he and Jared became so close. Their sleepy town will never be the same, nor will Jensen and Jared. (Inspired by The Crazies.)
read this. Creepy, atmospheric, and intense, this story really drew me in with it's vivid descriptions and eerie setting.

summary. The Winchesters find themselves grounded for several months when John is injured on a hunt, but no matter if they stay or go, a case always seems to find them in the end: a demon is threatening the town's children. 16-year-old Dean joins forces with a local hunter, whose belief in teaching Dean how to be the perfect hunter runs up against Sam's distrust and suspicion-but when Sam becomes the demon's next target, Dean must figure out how to stop it, and decide if he wants to embrace the life his mysterious mentor has laid out for him.
read this. The authors have taken the well-loved "Sam is in danger!" plotline and made it fresh and remarkable. This casefic epitomizes the genre, with a gripping plot and mysteries that last until the very last line. In addition, the personal reflections of preseries Dean were well-written and really give insight into his character.

summary. Jared has grown up dreaming of being like the heroes he plays on the big screen, something not helped by Jensen who has been there, done that, and really hates Jared’s new script. Then the unthinkable happens, and it seems like fate is determined to give Jared the chance at adventure he has always wanted. But he quickly finds that being a hero is a hell of a lot harder than it looks in the movies.
read this. This is compulsively readable with a lot of great action. Jared's motivations are relatable and I liked this Jensen who thinks and acts like he's invincible, but realizes he's more vulnerable than he thought throughout the course of the story.
reccer's note. Some Big Bang fics that I've enjoyed so far this summer. We're less than halfway through and I've fallen behind, so I'm glad I'm going on vacation soon so I'll have time to catch up! Happy reading! (Also, it was pointed out these are all available to download either as pdfs or one of the eReader formats, for those prefer to read that way!)
