James Doohan

Finally goes beyond the final frontier.

Perhaps it makes me a big Star Trek dork after all, but he was one of my childhood heroes. Being a technodweeb from a very early age, it's not difficult to see why I related to him. It's funny, I told him that once, and he just laughed and told me about the honorary Engineer's degree that was granted to him because so many of the entering engineers listed him as the reason they chose their career path. He was really a super nice guy who always had a story ready to tell and didn't shy away from his fans. The line could be a mile long and he'd always make a point to ask the fans about themselves and share a moment of his life. He wasn't a money grubber. He sold his pictures, sure, but on many occasions I saw him simply give them away to someone that didn't have the money. He was all about making the people around him comfortable. After hundreds of other fans must have passed by that day, he still made me feel like he cared about what I had to say to him. He was a really great person and I'm personally quite sad to hear of his passing.
