DVD Review: Spike and Mike's "Caught in the Act" Sick and Twisted Animation Collection
Know up front that I'm a huge fan of Dr. Tran. Seriously. It's freaking brilliant. http://www.beyondgrandpa.com/drtran/main.html Go there, buy the DVD. It's worth $13. I promise.
In fact, on the strength of Dr. Tran *alone*, I dropped the $20 for Spike and Mike's "Caught in the Act" dvd. Now, I don't normally buy dvds of random stuff like that because the odds of getting burned, let's face it, are really very high. But I did it, because I reasoned, that if it had a short of the quality of Dr. Tran, then the other stuff should be decent, right? Right??
Yea.. not so much. In fact, the rest of the dvd, every *single* other short was *CRAP*. I mean, not your run of the mill crap, but I'm talking capital letters with little asterisks around it *CRAP*. And that, my friend, you know is serious crap. It made my head hurt. I wanted to scream and run from the room it was so bad. On one level, the standard "entertainment" level, it was just bad. However, it gained a whole new level of pain when I realized that somebody spent *weeks* directing, drawing and animating (in some cases cg animating) only to end up sucking so hard I could feel my hair pull towards the television from across the room. My cats ran from the room for fear of being pulled into the swirly vortex of shit emanating from my TV. I mean, they put their heart, soul and everything into some of these shorts and it just wasn't enough to pull them out of their world of suck. Then I just wanted to cry.
The upshot to this is that at least when you get to Dr. Tran, the last short of the disc, by contrast, it's the funniest damn thing to walk the earth. It's like sitting in a pile of shit for a year only to be pulled out by the shimmering perfect gods of Olympus.
Anyway, Dr. Tran is really brilliant on its own, but all I'm saying here is that on that dvd it shines like a diamond mounted on a horse butthole ring.
This DVD earns the coveted dual dead horse head rating. One severed horse head just couldn't stink enough to describe how bad this DVD is (save Dr. Tran).
I'm just a pitchfork and torch away from rioting in the front lobby of Best Buy for selling me this steaming pile of crap without fair warning.
