Twelve Days (a.k.a. The Epic Holiday-Themed Porn) (Kirk/McCoy, Adult)

Overall Thoughts
Coming across a new fandom was a total surprise and incredibly energizing. I am a bit uncomfortable with where I left things in the previous fandom and haven't decided if I'm done with it or not, but I've been having a wonderful time writing Kirk/McCoy in the meantime. And it's really helped me with what has become a challenging time in my life, for which I shall forever be grateful.

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
More in a way, I suppose. I certainly had intentions of working on my long-running BtVS/AtS WIP, which I did not do at all this year, but even if I had worked on it, I doubt I would have written as many words as I ended up writing in Kirk/McCoy.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January?
Kirk/McCoy. I wasn't even looking for a new fandom when I saw and adored the movie and then actually ventured into reading some fic. And before you know it, the muse was speaking to me. Kind of a lot.

What's your own favorite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest?
I always think that fics are kind of like children and I tend to have a hard time playing favorites. I guess at this moment I might say And Possibly the Complications. There were a lot of things I was hoping to do with that fic and I think they came off pretty well in the end. Being in what I consider a reasonably function long-distance relationship, I enjoyed trying to portray one.

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
Um, deciding that the epic porn I was writing that was approximately half done on the day it was supposed to be posted (Dec 16) was going to have exactly nine parts and that I was going to be able to post a new part each day and finish by Christmas Eve? A little crazy. I learned that if you just abandon everything you're actually supposed to be doing, you can write a lot of porn in 9 days.

From my past year of writing, what was . . .

My best story of this year:
Twelve Days (a.k.a. The Epic Holiday-Themed Porn). Unexpectedly, what started out as a dirty D/s PWP acheived an impressive (if I must say so myself) balance of hotness, humor, sweetness and emotional depth. And I think it stayed in character. I'm still not quite sure how that happened, but I am proud.

My most popular story of this year:
Far and away, based on comments and Delicious bookmarkings, Borrowing Trouble. I have a wonderful prompt to thank for this fic in the romantic comedy genre, and it was a lot of fun writing character interactions beyond the main pairing. Spock Prime and the Kirk & Uhura friendship were surprising scene stealers.

Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
The differences in appreciation in general between an old and fading fandom and a shiny, new one are significant - thus, I must give two answers. First, Xander Harris versus Destiny was, I believe, a really strong cowriting effort that found a fresh idea in a very long-running fandom. I'm not sure more than 20 people actually read it. Second, my first Kirk/McCoy effort, Smug Wonderful Bastard. I think there were some really good character insights and nice humor in this fic, but I was new to the group and the fic was relatively short.

Most fun story to write:
I actually had fun with most of my stories this year. The new fandom energy was thrilling. But I'll choose to say Of Diving in Too Deep because I actually wrote a lot of it while on vacation in Italy and did so directly into my Palm Centro, since I didn't have my laptop with me. Gave my thumbs a workout.

Story with the single sexiest moment:
Well, the story has got to be Twelve Days, but then it gets hard to choose with all the crazy porn. I have to cheat and give three favorite moments from that fic: (1) Bones pulling off his nurse's underwear from under her skirt as he calls her darlin' and then sitting on a cot with the nurse between his legs while Jim eats her out at his command; (2) Jim out on the dance floor at a club letting six random strangers grope him and telling each of them that Bones' owns him, all while Bones watches; (3) Jim and Bones teasing each other while playing pool until Bones leans over and whispers in Jim's ear that he's going to spank Jim's ass while Jim writhes against his thigh like a 'bitch in heat,' causing Jim to throw the game so they can leave immediately.

Most "Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story:
Past the Last Exit, for sure. I mean, fic where Jim agrees to visit the parents of his 'friend with benefits' and then gets it on with her father? A lot? Um, yeah.

Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters:
And Possibly the Complications - I spent a ton of time thinking about how each of them considered and handled their relationship to each other and to Joanna, especially in light of the long-distance situation, and particularly why Bones resisted putting all his effort into getting himself and Joanna on the Enterprise, even while Jim did everything he could to make that happen.

Hardest story to write:
Twelve Days - Dude, it's hard to write that many 'days' of porn and keep it fresh and interesting. Plus the deadline I ended up with was totally killer. I wasn't entirely sure I would make it until I did.

Biggest Disappointment:
I will plagiarize sangueuk here and say: Too strong a word, but I’d like a few more hits and comments. Also, that I’ll never know if people pick up on some of the layers I put in, the nuances..., stuff like that. [Me speaking: I work very hard on the little details and the style and such, and try not to waste any words or lines.] But such is life. It’s not disappointment but I’d love to know.

Biggest Surprise:
The unintended emotional content that grew out of the filthy sex that was supposed to be the point of Twelve Days. Really wasn't expecting it, but the story took me there.

Most Unintentionally Telling Story:
I either revealed too much about my kinks in Twelve Days or over-identified with Bones' take on long-distance relationships in And Possibly the Complications. Or both.

Well, that was fun!

strongly fic related
