"Normally, I don't give a crap what critics say, but this time, I think that's accurate."
Well, when I say critics, I mean several That Guy With The Glasses personalities I love. I think Film Brain referred to it as "simply more black and white, but with the colors reversed." When I saw the trailers, that wasn't what I was hoping for.
I'm thinking I don't need to spend 20 bucks to feel annoyed and insulted. Maybe I'll wait for DVD.
"I've only seen Wicked once, but if I recall correctly, doesn't Elphaba still become the Wicked Witch of the West by the end of it? You see her sympathetic backstory, but she still becomes who we all know her to be, right? I would have preferred a Maleficent movie that was akin to that."
Yeah. In fact, all the events of Wizard of Oz happen as they did. We're just seeing the "deleted scenes" and it's mostly really clever. This shit looks like it's rewriting the tale. I'd have loved for this to be a clever Rosencrantz and Guilderstern are dead take where they give her a bit more due and depth or even twisted justifications. But just changing her hat to white?
"Merryweather is one of THE best parts of "Sleeping Beauty", but she doesn't exist in "Maleficent". None of the fairies do. I'm convinced they changed the names of the characters because they HAD to, given how drastically different they are from the animated version. "
No longer on the fence. It's decided. No Merryweather?
I'm thinking this shit can wait till it's on basic cable now.
When I say no Merryweather, I mean there is no character called "Merryweather" in the movie. There is also no blue fairy that gives Baby!Aurora a gift.
There ARE three fairies who take Aurora in after Maleficent casts the "curse" (though, it's the lamest curse ever to be cast), but they have different names and are total buffoons (you know, instead of heroic, helpful figures in the animated "Sleeping Beauty").
I actually told my aunt and uncle not to spend money on it and wait until it comes on cable, so...honestly, that's what I'd advise. There are probably better options out there that would be a more enjoyable experience on the big screen.
