BatKid

Today, a five-year-old boy named Miles wore a Batsuit, foiled evil plans of The Riddler and The Penguin, and won the hearts of the world.

I wasn't in San Francisco today, but I sure wish I had been. It was heartwarming and fun to follow the events that the Make-A-Wish Foundation set up for BatKid. Let's not even pretend that I didn't tear up in seeing pictures and reading tweets.

But, when this tweet showed up in my feed, I felt led to write my first LiveJournal post in five months.

I'm getting really tired of people claiming that Dark Knight Trilogy and "Man Of Steel" are joyless and uninspiring. I, honestly, have NO IDEA where those folks come up with that. How is seeing Bruce Wayne's journey to finding peace and Clark Kent finding his identity UNinspiring? Apparently, some need for the DC films to be full of one-liners yet lacking in consequences and hardships. While they're welcomed to that, making the assumption that everyone wants that out of a movie is absolutely ridiculous.

I prefer the DC movies over the Marvel Cinematic Universe BECAUSE they show how tough life can be. They show that not every choice is an easy one. They show that heroes are the ones who find the strength inside themselves and in turn, inspire others to do the same.

That's exactly what BatKid did today. Miles has spent his entire life, fighting and putting Leukemia into remission and through his story, strangers (including myself) were moved by his struggle and perseverance.

Miles could have asked to be Iron Man, the Hulk, or Captain America for a day, but instead, he chose to be The Batman. And, given his costume of choice, I'm willing to bet that his Batman is Christian Bale's (a man who understands the value in instilling hope through his time in the cowl). A character who chose to protect his city even though he could have been a playboy billionaire for the rest of his life. A character who was willing to be hunted if it meant his city could have peace. A character who so inspired his city that the citizens chose to fight alongside him.

A hero can be anyone, indeed. Thanks for being the embodiment of that today, Miles.
