Because there's no way Sawyer/Juliet could have fallen in love in 3 years?
I am listening to an old episode of The LOST Podcast with Jay and Jack when they were discussing "LaFleur".
I remember loving that particular podcast episode because so many people called in talking about how much they liked Suliet and how great it was to see Sawyer so happy and I was thinking "ME, TOO!".
So, I decided to re-listen and man...there was a really pissed off Skater who called in that I completely forgot about.
She was all "Suliet were together out of convenience and they have nothing in common, blah blah blah" and I just have to shake my head about that.
First, yes, Sawyer, originally, asked her to stay because there was nobody else he wanted around. But, let's be honest...Sawyer would've been fine. He would've tried to hook up with some hot Dharma chick he would, eventually, scope out.
He asks her to stay because he had gotten to like her and he appreciated that she had looked out for him. They had grown to be the leaders of their group and started to depend on each other, so I don't think it was just "I asked her to stay because I didn't want to be alone", even though that's one reason that Sawyer tells Kate in "What Kate Does". It started out that way, but I don't believe it stayed that way.
He FELL IN LOVE with Juliet.
If he was with Juliet, just out of convenience, her death wouldn't have led him to drinking, sitting in dirty clothes, and made him prey for the Smoke Monster. Is it so unreasonable that in three-years' time, they would have actually grown to like each other, become friends, and fall in love? I don't think so.
Second, who says they have to have things in common?
Are Skate a better fit because they're both con artists? Is Kate better for him because she knows how to lie, cheat, and steal as he did?
I'd argue not...because that doesn't help Sawyer grow as a character. He just stays as he always was. She doesn't better him in any way.
Sawyer NEEDED someone who made him a better man. LaFleur, head of security, was who he was because of Juliet's presence. He became a man who loved one woman and was committed to her. He became a guy who looked out for other people. Yes, he was still conning the DI because his backstory was all made up, but he learned to love it there and was a part of their community. He had a home there and he didn't want to leave it.
I'm sorry...it's fine with me if you like Skate and all, but please be reasonable about story. Kate never loved Sawyer. She always chose Jack over him, no matter how much cage sex was involved. I'd rather see Sawyer with a woman he, truly, loves and who loves him in return.
