Why can't we just let the people we love make their own decisions? Everyone's judgement is different, so why try and hider someone's actions because you, personally, don't agree with them. If you truly love that person, you should respect them enough to make valuable decisions, even if you don't agree. As long as they are not hurting anyone, why ( Read more... )

you need to respect their right to choose
but if they are putting themselves in bad situations or putting themselves at risk (ie drinking or smoking) and its obvious, I think if you love them, it's your responsibility to say something, knowing that you don't have the power to decide for them, but hoping that they'll make good decisions for themselves. Religion and swearing are generally excluded from this.

but to you drinking and smoking is a risk, but to me anyone that isn't a god fearing christian is a risk. Why is that different?

drinking and smoking is a physical risk threatening physical health. That's straight up biology (now mind you, I'm not saying one cig will kill you, but in excess, you get the idea), the religion is abstract ideology, when it comes to flat out science I think it's ok to say something if you are concerned for physical health, those threats are essentially the same to everyone.

You are at risk when driving without a seatbelt too, though. Many things are risks. I understand drinking and smoking is more important to you, but if it isn't to your friends, why should it matter?
