I am alive. I just am slightly... detained.
My new computer arrived-much much earlier than I expected it to. I ordered from
Cyberpower and so far I am beaucoup pleased. For less than 100 dollars total added to the cost of the components, they installed everything, shipped it VERY securely, and did a gorgeous job on the wiring. It's worth that much to me not to have to futz around with building a PC myself-though I can do it, it's a pain in the ass. ♥ Plus they tested all the components to make sure they all worked! ♥
Anyway, right now I'm copying files from the old computer to the new. You COULD say the easiest way to do this would be with simply attaching the old hard drive in an external case, an empty one of which I happen to have lying around-and you'd be right.
Unfortunately, there's none of that easy nonsense going on. The old hard drive happens to be the master hard drive and I promised my younger brother my (old) computer-this means I'm transferring the small files over the intranet and the big files via SneakerNet (i.e. putting them on a USB stick and walking the files back & forth).
And... le sigh My speakers don't work on the new computer. Granted, one hardly expects them to function automagically, but it would be nice, wouldn't it? Hmm, I should try a pair of headphones, see if they work.
On the plus side, I should write up my iTunes trick. How to get all your playcounts, album art, etc, from one computer to another without resetting anything. It's a bit of a pain in the ass, but it's quite easy really once you think about it-simply find the databases, make sure the file structure of where the mp3s are located remains intact from hard drive to hard drive, and copy the databases over.
For those of you who are interested, which is probably no one (except possibly
deadhero), my new computer specs are as follows:
