Somehow, it wasn't the water that woke her. Possibly because while she was lying half-submerged when the waves rolled in, it was her lower half, and her armor was (for a while, anyway) effectively waterproof. Either way, she could've ignored the water. But even unconscious, Shepard was hard-wired to know when she wasn't alone, and as she opened her eyes to the setting sun, she knew that this was one such time ( ... )

Stephen heard the telltale draw of a pistol and the crunch of feet on rocks well before Shepard cleared her throat. Why was it, lately, that people had such a strong desire to pull a gun on him. He paused on his route to the walls ahead of him, turning to get a look at the person currently targeting him, his hand resting on the 38 cal. at his side. The stranger had an advantage over him for now, gun drawn and ready well before he would normally have reacted. Personally he still wasn't sure he could be shot. Was it possible to die twice ( ... )

On the one hand, he was armed. That alone was enough to keep her gun at ready on any other day. But on the other hand, this stranger seemed to be doing his best to wave the metaphorical white flag. And there was something about the dimming light and the damp crawl of her skin inside of the armor that usually felt almost like skin itself that made Shepard just want to get this stand-off thing over with and figure out what the hell was going on.

So instead of pointing out that waking up alone and planetside, location unknown, damn well is a problem, she let her pistol drop just slightly to show that she was cautious but not honestly out for blood.

"That depends." On how much he could tell her about her current situation. But honestly, underneath his steady calm, he seemed... about as new to this as she was. "But I bet you don't know much more than I do. Am I wrong?"

Stephen shook his head, dropping his hand slowly but taking the other off his gun. He was sure this woman could have killed him by now if that was her intention and the last thing he needed was to make enemies in his first few moments wherever this place was. She was very likely as lost as he was if that comment had any basis to it ( ... )

The last thing he remembered was Jeff Denlon approaching him with murder in his eyes. Now, John found himself lying on a beach with the sun setting in the distance. As he sat up, he felt stronger than he had in ages. Was this the afterlife? If so, it was too dreary to be Heaven.

Then he remembered the message from Kernos that flashed before his eyes. How ironic that now he was playing someone else's game. It was no matter, he would play the game and win.

John rose to his feet, and looked about the island. There were a few others on the beach, but his interest was in what appeared to be a fortress on the mainland. He was going to have to hurry if he wanted to make it by dark.

The older gentleman caught Stephen's attention. He was never the type to leave anyone out on their own, even strangers. Such an unusual situation as this one, the more people stuck together, the better. In the dark, predators of any time or species were far more prone to snatch loners than attack a group, and while it leant itself more to their being noticed, that was not necessarily a bad thing. He paused to focus his attention on John, who seemed to have had the same thought as Stephen as far as getting to the wall was concerned. His steps slowed a fraction for the man to catch up.

"It's a long shot, but I don't suppose you remember how you ended up here, either?"

"I was in the hospital." An unofficial hospital, but one none the less. There was no point in lying, the scrubs he was wearing would betray him. This would be the first test of his stay in this strange place, how he would interact with others. It seemed as though he had been restored to full health, and would not waste the opportunity. Picking up the pace a bit, he caught up to the other man.

"It was near the end..but I don't feel sick anymore. I feel like I've been given a new lease on life." He smiled, amused by his own joke.

That was something Stephen could relate to. He remembered all too well the intense flashes of pain before being swallowed by the darkness he had been certain spelled his demise. The fact that he was alive again on these unfamiliar shores with no signs of the many injuries he had suffered made it all a bit surreal. He had no intentions of wasting the second chance, though. He only barely remembered the message as if it were part of a dream, rather than reality ( ... )
