The first round of the presidential election was held this weekend.
Remember how I've been not-so-secretly bitching about Timo Soini, the candidate of True Finns (god I hate that party and its stupidly misleading name), and his general assholery? Well, he only got 9.4% of the votes. So, good news: I can stay in Finland! (I made a sacred promise to leave Finland if Soini gets elected, and my grandma said she'd move to Spain with me and we could live in a bungalow together. My gram is awesome.)
AND AND AND. That's not even the best part.
Pekka Haavisto made it to the second round (which will be held in two weeks)! 18.8%!!! Okay, so Sauli Niinistö got nearly 40%, but 18.8% is really fucking spectacular and things can change in the second round and, god, this is amazing. Why? Because Pekka Haavisto is a beautiful human being, a Green League candidate, and an openly gay man who lives in a registered partnership with a kind-of-really-gorgeous hairdresser. THE MAN IS PERFECT.
I can't. I'm so proud of Finland right now. It would be so fucking fantastical to have an openly gay president. To be completely honest, though, it probably won't happen, because Niinistö is far more popular. But there's always a chance. We'll see after the second round.
Also, the Christian Democrats candidate only got like 2.5% of the votes. The Christian Democrats basically talk shit about gay people every chance they get, so this is, well, I hate to say "delicious", but, fuck it, this is delicious.
