dear friends,
if last time i posted i was launching a call for pen-pals, this time i'm crying for help.
this question will concern mostly kitty owners (or, better said, people owned by kitties *g*) who have some experience (perhaps more than mine) - or perhaps vets etc. to make a long story short, i have two cats, both of them over 1 year old now. i've been taking care of them since they were waaay smaller, and they did cause a lot of trouble, but w/e. the plan is to take them to the countryside, at my father's, once they have the antirabic shot and spring comes. come march, they'll be gone into freedom. till then...
what's been happening for two weeks now goes like this: the cats share a litter. it's a huuuge one and they never minded sharing it before. until a short while ago, when, during the night, one of them pooed next to the litter. the situation repeats itself every night, even if the litter is shining with cleanliness every half a day :/. moreover, one day i found two sets of poo in their now usual corner. yesterday i cleaned the spot with a substance they don't like, hoping they'd stop; no they didn't. during the night i hear them scratching the tiles, "covering" the poo.
i have two theories about this: either they're becoming territorial and they need to mark their own space with something (they're both unsterilized), either they're somehow unhappy with sharing the litter (even if they were perfectly fine with sharing it till now). there's the possibility for them to wish to draw attention, as well.
what should i do? have you ever been confronted with such a situation? what worked?
