Yet surveys have shown that the extreme doctrines of these
organizations command the allegiance of only a very small minority of
Muslims--and usually among the desperate and the oppressed
(Palestinians, people in war-torn Afghanistan etc.). Just as Nazism
did not represent German culture, or the Ku Klux Klan American
culture, let us not take Islamic radicals to represent Islamic
civilisation.

The recent riots have greatly damaged the reputation of Islam, and
indeed, that of all religions. But it is not religion that causes
violence. Humanity will seize on any excuse, any 'cause', to start
slaughtering each other. Nazi and Communist regimes, both secular,
non-religious political systems, murdered more people than all
religious wars combined.

Instead of blaming the spiritual culture that often serves as a damper
on man's innate bloodlust and greed, it is better to blame our inner
perversity that relentlessly twists the sincerest light.

Thus let us seek to understand our fellow Muslim Singaporeans and the
great and ancient civilisation they represent. Let us not be like the
ignorant and insensitive cartoonists that sparked off this
bloodthirsty fury.

Happy reading X)
