Yet surveys have shown that the extreme doctrines of these organizations command the allegiance of only a very small minority of Muslims--and usually among the desperate and the oppressed (Palestinians, people in war-torn Afghanistan etc.). Just as Nazism did not represent German culture, or the Ku Klux Klan American culture, let us not take Islamic radicals to represent Islamic civilisation.
The recent riots have greatly damaged the reputation of Islam, and indeed, that of all religions. But it is not religion that causes violence. Humanity will seize on any excuse, any 'cause', to start slaughtering each other. Nazi and Communist regimes, both secular, non-religious political systems, murdered more people than all religious wars combined.
Instead of blaming the spiritual culture that often serves as a damper on man's innate bloodlust and greed, it is better to blame our inner perversity that relentlessly twists the sincerest light.
Thus let us seek to understand our fellow Muslim Singaporeans and the great and ancient civilisation they represent. Let us not be like the ignorant and insensitive cartoonists that sparked off this bloodthirsty fury.
