BACKGROUND HISTORY:
The story of Clare begins during a job by the then-No. 1 Claymore (human-yoma hybrids), Teresa of the Faint Smile, who was called in during an infestation of yoma (humans that now feed on human guts, also called beasts) in which she took care of it rather quickly. However, there was a silent girl who broke from the crowd, attaching herself rather firmly to Teresa's leg. The Claymore kicks her away, and the girl comes running back, silently clinging for dear life. Again, she's given the boot. This time, she stays down. Teresa leaves. The girl follows. It isn't long before Teresa realizes this girl will not leave, and allows her to stay until the next town, granting her the name Clare, after the twin goddesses of Love, Teresa and Clare.
On the way, a man from the previous town comes and tries to rape Teresa for ruining his hand. Clare was asleep, but wakes up and brandishes a branch at the man, telling him not to touch Teresa. He's scared off, but the event grants Clare the ability to speak again, and she admits that she had become attached to Teresa as a comfort after seeing the pain and loneliness in the Claymore's eyes. Teresa's warrior heart begins to soften, which in a shonen series, is not okay as will be proven. After she clears out the next town of its yoma, she leaves Clare with the townsfolk and heads out (but not after a heart-wrenching declaration from Clare that she only wanted to be with Teresa) to continue her life. Bandits attack after hearing the yoma are gone, slaughtering the entire town. Teresa runs back after thinking of Clare, only to find the leader taking Clare off by the hair. She decides, "Screw the rules, I'm taking Clare back," killing the leader and sending the bandits (literally) running for their lives and thus breaking the cardinal rule of the Organization:
Never take a human life.
... At which point the Organization is forced to send Claymores after Teresa of the Faint Smile to kill her. After a battle in which Teresa decides she has to live for Clare, No.'s 2 - 5 are called in to deal with her. La-di-dah, she's winning and decides not to kill them all and leaves. Priscilla, No. 2, decides she's not going to take having someone better than her, Awakens (essentially, loses her humanity), and beheads Teresa before Clare's very eyes. Thus, Clare's whole world shatters and her hatred of her own weakness begins. She takes Teresa's severed head, finds the men in black (this one happened to be called Rubel) who follow the Claymores to assign their jobs, and demands Teresa's flesh be put into her to make her a Claymore. The issue: Teresa is half-yoma. This process made Clare only one-fourth yoma.
Timeskip. Clare is now ranked No. 47 of 47. During a job, she finds a boy named Raki who reminds her of herself, and ta-da, insta-traveling companion. She now has a cook (even if she barely eats anyway) for boy who refuses to leave her side. Moving right along, Clare is sent to investigate a yoma attack on a city that bans Claymores from coming inside their walls. During this, she does something incredibly strange. She Awakens. But when Raki refuses to leave her side to allow a guard to kill her as she wishes, his love and willpower forces her back into a human shape, and she is now a target of the Organization. Increasingly hard missions will now be directed her way.
The next big thing is a hunt for a Voracious Eater (a.k.a. Awakened One). She is the lowest rank possible, and "Phantom" Miria, No. 6, is none too happy that Clare is virtually being sent to her death. Miria and Clare (using her yoma suppression and reading the yoki flow, she can predict the attacks, and dodge them, a skill seemingly built up to work exclusively against Awakened Ones) work in concert to destroy the creature while Helen and Deneve watch on the sidelines. After this fight, Miria realizes that they all have something in common: Her, Helen, Deneve, and Clare have all partially-Awakened and returned to tell the tale. After a quick plot exposition (in which Miria reveals her conspiracy theory), they agree to survive, meet back up, and go their separate ways.
Clare continues on her merry way until one mission sends her to hunt an Awakened One with No. 4, "Rippling" Ophelia. Sadly, Ophelia is a pretty mean-hearted Claymore, and after Clare realizes Ophelia is more willing to throw Raki into the clutches of the Awakened One, she runs away with Raki, leaving Ophelia to deal with the Awakened One (which she does) only to turn and hunt Clare, who smells like an Awakened One to the crazy Claymore. Clare sends Raki away with a kiss and begins to deal with the psychotic No. 4.
Ophelia chops off Clare's arm and sends the No. 47 fleeing into the hills, only to stumble across a presumed-dead Claymore, "Quicksword" Ilena, former No. 3 sent to kill Teresa. Clare recovers with the hidden Claymore who hasn't aged a bit, and learns a new technique: Quicksword. She is told her passionate spirit can't hold the calm required for extended use, but, realizing Clare is going back out into the wide world, Ilena sacrifices her remaining arm to Clare, who reattaches it to her stump. Clare leaves and reengages Ophelia, who, by now, has Awakened. She kills Ophelia using Quicksword.
As promised, she hides her yoma and begins to search for Raki. She finds traces of him, but is side-tracked when random Claymore fodder comes into town begging for her help and dying on the street. She runs off to be a heroine and ends up facing something a lot bigger than anticipated: an Abyssal One's henchman. Mid-fight, No. 3, "God Eye" Galatea shows up in all her hotness to save Clare's impulsive butt and drag the wild child back to the Organization to continue her duty. Galatea sends Clare below to rescue the only living Claymore from the group sent, No. 9, Jean. Through saving Jean's life and forcing her back into a human shape (after Awakening), Clare secures herself a bodyguard. After the three escape (which, in reality, is Riful simply allowing the three to live), Galatea decides not to drag them (since Jean wasn't going to let Clare out of her sight) kicking and screaming back and leaves.
Jean and Clare are then sent north with the bribe that Rubel had heard Raki had been taken north as a slave. Awakened Ones are mobilizing into an army, and it's almost certain they're being sent to their death. Miria is the leader of the group of 24 Claymores sent, and fashions a plan which would allow some to survive. Out of them, the Sexy Seven (Miria, Clare, Helen, Deneve, Tabitha, Cynthia, and Yuma) survive, and go into hiding, but not after Jean sacrifices her life to pull Clare back from the brink of totally Awakening.
Another timeskip, seven years later, the 7 survivors have been training while suppressing their yoma and have been presumed dead. A hunt of an Awakened One by modern-day Claymores forces them back into the open. They decide to head south, lead by Miria, to begin the hunt for Raki and hopefully tear down the Organization. En route, they discover a group of warriors engaging Riful. Clare body-snatches one Claymore while the other 6 rescue the lamest fodder you'll ever meet. She bargains with Riful for knowledge and leaves without paying the price (most likely not the best idea Clare has come up with) and drop the deadweight-Claymores off and continue to Labona, the holy city Clare saved about seven years prior.
Conveniently enough, Galatea (now blind) is chilling with her religious homies and the Sexy Seven swoop in to save the city's collective behinds from the Awakened form of Blood Red Agatha, finally starting negotiations with the city to allow Claymores into the city without all the hatred. While there, Miria says the Claymores can run off and do their thing as long as they have a battle-buddy, much to Clare's dismay, Cynthia and Yuma are assigned to her, and she leaves to go hunt for her errant Raki.
In a city saving more random Claymore fodder, her mini-group knocks out all the Claymore, totally own the Awakened One, and meet up with (guess who?) Rubel! Conveniently enough, he has more conspiracy theory plot exposition and is really a spy for the enemies of the Organization, who all want to create fully controllable Awakened Ones as weapons for their endless war against the Dragonkin tribe.
TIMELINE SUMMARY:
Clare will be taken from the last time she's seen in canon, Chapter 85: Guarding the Brotherhood, right after Rubel reveals he's a spy. Her knowledge of what has been going on is revealed, and is now aware that Miria was played for her capacity to work in groups, and that the information she "discovered" was truly planted, as Rubel has no qualms about allowing Miria's group to defeat the Organization, as he told her outright. Her plans will have to be put on hold while she searches for a way out of Rivelata and back onto her plans of fighting Riful and continuing her search for Raki.
PERSONALITY:
Clare is outwardly calm, but, truly, underneath it, is a soul passionately hunting for revenge against Teresa's murderer. She defends her friends and is driven, more so by herself, than society. She is constantly being reminded she's weak, especially so by anyone ranked higher among the Claymores. As such, she is well aware that she needs to be stronger, and that factors highly into her thought process.
Friends are kept at an arm's length. Seemingly as soon as she gets close to someone, they're torn from her. That's not to say she doesn't make friends, but, because of her hidden bitterness and hurt, she wants to keep from being hurt again. Jean made friends with her, forcing herself onto the 47th Claymore merely because Clare had saved Jean's life. She can make allies, and does so, but most stay purely professional. Long association (or association during traumatic events, as is the typical for a shonen series) is another way to get into Clare's heart.
Despite all this, her drive to be stronger wins over. She'll rush into battle, knowing her opponent is far stronger than herself, often resulting in other people shoving her face into the ground. She isn't suicidal, though, and that's the difference. Clare, in the end, has a good heart. She won't leave behind an abandoned boy, no matter how much it would slow her down, and she certainly won't do something that will force her to lose her humanity unless it's something extreme, as is exhibited in the fight with Rigald, she was willing to push her body to its absolute maximum, but Awakened to the point where she didn't think she could pull herself back, and was willing to die there while she was still slightly human.
Concerning her friends and Teresa, Clare has a hot temper. She can rise to the bait offered of knowledge of her hated foe (Priscilla) or grow enraged when something is denied to her she so painfully wants. Above all, an angry Clare is a forced to be reckoned with. Though ranked dead last, she has the capacity to defeat an Awakened single-digit, given enough incentive and provocation. Her ability to go over her limit and return is a perfect example of her reckless willpower.
SPECIAL ABILITIES:
Claymore: As a Claymore, Clare's speed, strength, agility, stamina, and reaction times are improved above that of a human's due to the yoma inside her. These will be on par with a human upon entrance to Rivelata, and grow as she slowly works them back up.
Offensive Type: Clare is an offensive type of Claymore. She can reattach limbs if severed, though, if she loses the limb and is forced to regrow it, the limb will never grow beyond a human's strength. It's likely this won't ever be an issue, but if it is, she will probably have to Awaken in Rivelata to force herself to reattach the limb due to the Garnet's powers.
Yoki reading: Clare can read the flow of yoki in a yoma or Claymore. She uses this ability in concert with suppressing her yoma to predict the attacks of an Awakened One. This will be an ability she loses and is forced to work back up.
Yoki manipulation: She can alter yoki flow, just barely. Nothing to the degree that Galatea can, and, at best, she'll get this back after a long while practicing in Rivelata.
Windcutter: Learned from Flora, Clare can use this ability to rapidly chop up anything in her way, including slicing as close to someone as an arm near Galatea's head, only cutting a piece of her hair (which is a sin, in case you didn't know). This ability will be directly affected by the strength of her yoki in Rivelata.
Quicksword: Taught to her by Ilena, this move is of about equal power to the Windcutter. However the latter is more controllable, so Clare ends up using Windcutter more often than Quicksword. Again, it's directly affected by her yoki power level.
Ilena's Arm: She has an arm that is a completely different level than the rest of her body. I doubt the Garnet will alter this at all.
Half-Awakened: She is among those who have half-Awakened. This being the case, she can go over her limit and still return, granted she doesn't go too far to the point where her whole body Awakens. Returning from that still requires immense willpower, and still will in Rivelata.
Snowflake: Clare can learn pretty much any technique thrown at her, really, given enough time and determination. No, the Garnet can't take her snowflakiness.
Bodysnatcher: She can appear out of nowhere and steal a body while an enemy is distracted whether from under the tentacles of death, if they're pinned under a spike of death, or wrapped up in Riful's ribbons of death.

THIRD PERSON:
Her head hurt. Without opening her eyes, Clare was doing a mental run-through of damages assessing herself. It seemed there were no injuries. With that, her silver eyes opened to a blue sky and a gently rocking boat. The next thing that came to her mind was that she was oddly hungry and that she couldn't feel the yoki flow of Yuma and Cynthia, both of whom had last been around her. She sat up, rubbing her head.
She could feel the claymore on her back, not quite relaxing with the reassuring weight, and it seemed she was still completely clothed (which was likely a better thing for the multitude of humans surrounding her). What reason would the Organization- no, Rubel, have for kidnapping her? She almost expected the black-robed spy to appear any moment to begin explaining exactly what was going on. This, of course, meant that her decision to fall into Rubel's plans, as she knew he expected, was put off course because, clearly, he wasn't appearing any time soon.
Clare stood, calmly taking in the scene. A tropical island, it seemed. It was both strange and almost... predictable, in a strange sort of way. But Rubel hadn't implied he would report them... So why was she here? Her hand slipped up to the handle of her sword. Without her yoki sensing, Clare was more than cautious with the seemingly-human people around on the boat with her, forcing herself away from their groups and to herself.
As she waited for it to dock, she was stuck with more questions than answers. Unfortunately, it seemed it was becoming a standard in her life, which was irritating to say the least. She let out a sigh. Without her yoki sensing, she realized she'd be even weaker than before. Is that why her sword felt especially heavy, or was it the anticipation of the unknown? With her usual antics, Clare stepped off the boat, brushing by the humans and into the semi-ruined city, which, also sadly, was not an unfamiliar sight.
