The crushing weight of sin

Psalm 38
    A psalm of David. A petition.
 1 O LORD, do not rebuke me in your anger
   or discipline me in your wrath.
2 For your arrows have pierced me,
   and your hand has come down upon me.
3 Because of your wrath there is no health in my body;
   my bones have no soundness because of my sin.
4 My guilt has overwhelmed me
   like a burden too heavy to bear.

It's hard to get over the fact that we have sinned. God is so merciful that when we sin we should be  like " God, I am SO sorry! I can't believe I did that to YOU!" and it should take us a while to get over it. It should be  an overwhelming mourning. Mourning over our sinfulness. We should beg God to forgive us and change us. I don't understand how we can get so stubborn sometimes and NOT want to repent. How can we go about as if we haven't sinned? How can we NOT feel the crushing weight of our own sin over us?  We MUST repent and ask the Lord to help us!
