I'm a newbie to the online community but not new to Numb3rs . . . I did my undergraduate degree in physics/mathematics, so I actually used to watch N3 to encourage me to do my homework. *sweatdrop* Now I just watch it when I miss my old life too much after a career change into law. Since S1 in particular was accurate with its math, it was actually pretty beneficial. Then I got hooked on the characters and plot, and it was all downhill from there.

Can we get some fic challenges? It looks like the Numb3rs gen-fic comm is dead :(

You fit right into this community then, especially since I feel for you. I have an undergraduate degree in mathematics and in chemistry and I decided to pursue the chemistry part of that combination. There are a lot of days I wish I would have stuck with math, but that's why life's a journey... not a destination, right ( ... )

The math was actually great for a lot of the show. The COMAP mathematical modelling competition in 2010 was actually based on criminal geographic profiling - when the problem dropped, I read it and started flailing with delight because I actually knew what to do, and dragged my team to the top 20% worldwide on the problem. Though my prof holds that I really should have tried to solve it using a stochastic model instead. D:

I think monthly prompts would be good, with no real limit on word-count. I think having a really loose structure would make it easier for more people to participate. :D

Monthly prompts, no word-count. I like it. I haven't done a monthly challenge here before. I tried to do one every other month but things didn't always work out so I stopped. But, maybe doing a simple monthly challenge would work. If you have any ideas, thoughts, suggestions, let me know. I'm open to most things. :)

How about themed contests? I was part of a fic contest community awhile back where there would be a prompt, about 2 weeks to submit an entry, and there would be 1 week of voting and the top 3 got little banners (nothing fancy - more like a screencap of certain dimensions with the title of your fic and your author name on it, 1st place or whatever)

In the end it fell apart just because it required a lot of participation on behalf of the whole community; there would be fics, and there would be voting. It might not work, but if something like this is tried, I'd recommend 4-6 week entry period, 2 weeks for voting, and only have a couple of them a year?

I will see if I can put my thinking cap on and get something like this in motion. I also need to see about changing savecolby comments back to the old version. I hate this new thing LJ is doing. It's ridiculous.

I will try to come up with a theme and run something in February. February is a good month - since it's also the anniversary of Dylan's fan site. LOL. Speaking of, that's something else I need to do this weekend. Yikes. *gets back to her to do list while she is still on vacation
