Into the Monolith

Well, hell.

I just found out that Arthur C. Clarke died today.

Damn. I knew it would happen; he was of very advanced years, but it still hits me hard. Clarke was one of the earliest great joys of my boyhood, a scout who pointed ahead to far and glorious horizons, always cautioning me to think carefully before I proceeded, but to then go forth with boundless enthusiasm and hope for the future.

And now he's gone. Heinlein in '88, Asimov in '92, and now all of the Big Three have departed us. But their heirs in the realm of hard science fiction have proven themselves capable of widening their well-worn roads and blazing new trails, and we are not diminished by their passing.

But I am sobered. And saddened. He was a great man whose like we shall never see again.

Farewell, Sir Arthur. May your next stop be full of stars.
