Kiss Me Deadly: A Jacob Keane Assignment stars Robert Gant as Jacob Keane. It was directed by Ron Oliver and also stars Shannen Doherty and John Rhys-Davies.
I enjoy watching Robert Gant, and Rhys-Davies is good in just about everything he does. Worth watching then, right?
Wrong.
I couldn't finish the film, and that makes me mad because it had such a promising start. Good actors, good premise, good cinematography and a pretty cool walk down the United States' political memory lane.
Keane, a former undercover agent in Russia is now a photographer. He once photographed many landmark world events, then turned to fashion photography. He has a young daughter as well as a devoted lover. Life is going as planned until Keane gets a call from his former undercover partner. She's in trouble, but she's got amnesia. Keane realizes immediately that someone is after her and decides he's the only who can help.
Done poorly, that's a terrible premise. Done well, as this one promised to be, it can be exciting.
SPOILERS AHEAD
Here's where it when wrong for me:
1. Keane realizes his phone has been traced. So he plants his phone on some unsuspecting guy he entices into a bar bathroom. He promises to meet the guy at a gay club but never shows, of course - he's off trying to save his former partner.
One of the criminals finds the young man and the phone. The young man says he knows nothing, which is true, but gets his throat slit. Keane had to know that would happen. Why not just toss the phone in a wastebasket instead of planting it on some stranger?
2. Keane meets up with his devoted lover, asks him for whatever cash he has as well as his car. Lover hands over both and begs to know what's going on. Keane says he can't tell him now, but after he takes his former partner to Switzerland he'll come back and spill the beans. Does he warn his lover to be careful? No. Does he urge his lover to get out of town and hide? No. Does the lover get killed? Yes.
Normal people do not do these things. Normal people try to limit collateral damage, especially to their loved ones. Keane didn't even bother trying to protect his lover, much less an innocent stranger.
So, I turned it off. Life is too short to be watching annoying films when I could be writing fanfic.
