May/June Book Reviews

Book reviews are going to be short and sweet this month (I say this and then I end up rambling for pages upon pages). I spent most of the month re-reading Kim Harrison’s Hollow series, as 1) I love it and 2) I always forget some of the finer details that Harrison tends to loop back to in future instalments. After that, I finally managed to get ( Read more... )

I re-read them a while ago, too, and the earlier books are an absolute riot! I agree about the Midheaven plot. Originally I was really intrigued by the idea of Midheaven when Skimmer first mentioned in, but then the reality of it turned out to be less fascinating than I thought it would be. I was expecting a crazy place where we'd learn more about the signs, the history, more about the Tulpa etc. But nope.

I think the Lola angle made Hunter's storyline more interesting and I liked that it made him more than just the love interest. On the other hand, I didn't like how that particular subplot overshadowed Jo's battle with the Tulpa. It was like... the first few books built up this tension and as a result the readers were expecting a massive battle at the end of it all, with Jo finding some way to destroy the Tulpa. But instead the big showdown was with Lola, and the fight with the Tulpa after that just felt lacklustre. I still don't actually understand how she managed to defeat him. And there was no mention of the original manuals etc., which Pettersson pretty much insinuated that the key to defeating him was in.

The final battle was definitely a let-down, for sure. I guess I prefer it to dragging out a series needlessly, though (I'm looking at 'cho, Laurell K Hamilton!)

Anyway, there are a couple of books I think you should read, Ki, because I think you will love them! I don't have them in paperback to send you, but if you can, try and get your hands on Meljean Brook's The Iron Duke and Thea Harrison's Dragon Bound. Two of my favourite reads these past few months :)
