On defending Ocean's 12

So I have this love affair with Ocean's 11. Love that movie, love love love it. It's on my phone as a .wma so I can watch it at my leisure and experience all that is good with the movie. What I love about the movie is the tight clip it trots along at, the excellent dialog and the wonderful cinematography. Everything about it just strikes a chord with me that I have trouble in seeing the flaws in the movie.

Having said that, Ocean's 12 was viewed with disgust in the theaters by SWMBO and I, whereupon it was soundly derided as a mere shadow of it's parent. I loaned the DVD to my wonderful friend Lynn, and I have yet to stop apologising for the pain she went through watching it.

Here's the thing, though. Ocean's 12 has been on HBO for a month or so now, and I've had a chance to catch it without recoiling too badly in horror, and it's surprisingly watchable. Sure, the story is a little sketchy to start with, and there are some horrid connections between scenes, but you know what? It's actually a pretty good movie. It's also a salient lesson in that you can mostly judge the quality of a movie by your reaction when you first see it, but the true impact of a movie sometimes takes more than one viewing to feel. I am not anywhere near as in love with O12 as I am O11, but it's definitely worth a second or third look.

I'm still sorry Lynn. Give it another chance.
