Grocery shopping thus far in NYC has been frustrating with a capital Q, L, and Z. But today, oh today, I experienced grocery NIRVANA. Its name is
Fairway Market. Located a mere 14 blocks from my school (though much farther from my apartment), it blows the pants off every single other grocery store I've ever been in.
From the outside it looks a little sketchy -- it's way off the west side of harlem pretty much underneath the riverside drive overpass. But inside? It's a maze of beautiful produce and 30 different kinds of specialty crackers, and cheeses, and teas, and spices, and organic grocery things, and breads, and coffees, and pretty much anything you'd ever want to find in a grocery store. At least 10 different kinds. And an olive bar. And a giant "cold room" with meat and dairy and all the vegan products you could want! Every brand of soy milk I've ever seen, 8 different kinds of tempeh (including the tempeh bacon i'm sort of obsessed with), and on and on.
But the key: the prices aren't bad. Especially for New York. Like, they're Harlem prices, not NYC prices. AND they deliver. For $4.25 they'll bring my purchases to my doorstep. (This totally beats paying $4 for the bus and hauling them myself.) I could easily ride my bike there from school, shop, and then ride home and have my stuff driven there for me!
And on an entirely different note, I got mail at my new place for the first time! And it included the first of my postcards :-) So thanky, and you should all do likewise!
