Filler

I feel that I need to post stuff to this journal, if only to get some practice writing as I hope to become a published author at some point. I have therefore decided to start updating about the books I've been reading.

I finished reading I Am Not A Serial Killer by Dan Wells yesterday. I found in either the crime or horror section of my local library.. It's about a teenage boy who's family owns a mortuary, and he sometimes helps out in it. He is also a sociopath. When local people start being murdered, he is fascinated, and becomes obsessed with the crimes.

THE NEXT BIT CONTAINS SPOILERS

I have to say that overall, I did enjoy the book. I liked seeing everything from the point of view of someone who is not a traditional protagonist, and would be the villain in a lot of stories. It made for an interesting read, as the character didn't react in the way a lot of people would have to the events in the book. I found myself rooting for him, when he was clearly acting like a serial killer himself - especially at the end with his next door neighbour.

I didn't find it as gory as I expected it to be, considering that it had a warning on the back of the book, which was a shame. But that might be because according to Wikipedia, it's a YA book. This isn't the first time something like that has made it into the adult fiction section at my library ( a graphic novel aimed 13 year old girls in with Neil Gaiman's Sandman lol). I was also a  bit disappointed that the killer turned out to be supernatural, because I don't think it needed it. It would have worked just as well if the killer was simply human.

In the end, it was definitely worth reading, so thank you library for putting it in the wrong section. Not sure that I'll intentionally seek out the sequel, with the same character, but if I find a copy in my library, I'll definitely check it out.

So this my first attempt at this, and it's definitely not perfect. Hopefully the next one will improve. I am now reading The Devil's Staircase by Helen Fitzgerald. This is definitely not aimed at a YA audience. I will post again when I've finished it.

library, writing practice, i am not a serial killer, neil gaiman's sandman, filler, dan wells, books, helen fitzgerald, the devil's staircase
