My husband and I just closed on a condo (and by the way, woo hoo! we're homeowners, we're homeowners!!!). The one problem with the layout, which we otherwise love, is the lack of closet space. It has one and a half closets, of which only the one can actually have clothes hung in it, as marked in blue in the floorplan below:
So, even though some other fixes are higher on our list of things to do with the place, we've been playing "find the potential new closets hidden in this floorplan." We've thought of a couple of options: first this one, which creates a deep closet AND creates a little nook for hanging coats up in the front hallway (directly below the new closet, see it?). New closet space is marked in blue, and new walls that would need to be built are in red.
A second and much bolder move would create three new closets by shaving a thin slice off the dining room.
So... what do you guys think of these options? The first is likely to be cheaper, but is the second better? And please feel free to look for other places closets could be hiding. I'm convinced we have more closets and we just need to bring them out of the space somehow. :) Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions!
(By the way, that biggish room in the upper left of the picture is a pantry. It's already lined with shelves and not at all suitable for clothing, although it will be able to hold a ton of the boxes we might otherwise put in the upper shelves of the closets we don't have.)
